Maybe a Ford FPV GT E ot F6 E? It is apparently a pretty damned good car, but may be stretching the budget. A bit cheaper but without sooo many trimmings would be a straight GT or F6 Typhoon.

Most European things are out of your budget, one of those Scirrocos would have been nice but Aussies miss out. You already said Audis were too cosy. Subaru Liberty R maybe? The R32 starts to look pretty good in this company though...

Alfas (GT or Brera) fit the bill but are all FWD. Still a good drive though I hear.

I had a 08 R32, 09 Gti and currently another tdi 2.0L for the wife she has now had for 3 years.
The R 32 is great, small V6, eats front tyres and 18inch cost $455 a pop.
Brakes wear very quickly, rear 1st and pads wear same rate as rotors.

They are also very thirsty, 13L/100 and are now no longer made.
New one is the R20, a 2 litre turbo that is supposed to be quicker(just) and easier on tyres and less under and than sudden over steer.

The GTI is more sedate, yet very quick, its onlu .6 sec slower to 100 km/h.

My wife likes sporty cars, before that I had a Audi TT, 2 L, great car.

The R32 is quicker, handles better and sounds better but costs way more to maintain and insure.
They will soon be a collectable.
Very quirky too.
Headlights have VW inserted into them, boot release is via VW badge and drink holder doubles as bottle opener. The list goes on.

They can also be chipped of its preverbial, i did a Remus exhaust($1700) and it sounds nuts, they rev to 7000rpm---
All in all, I figure more of a boy racer kind of car but who knows, get her into one while still around or wait for the updated 2L model soon.

From experience, the 2L diesel is also quick, only a couple of secs slower to 100 and dirt cheap to run, maintain and insure.
Drive them all and see for yourself and herself.

That's a very thorough answer I was just going to say..

R32 is more powerful yep but also more weight. The GTI is, I think, a better compromise.

It really comes down to .. does your wife want a SPORTS CAR or a "sporty car".

There is a difference.

No worries. A Mitsubishi Ralliart Lancer may be another avenue to explore depending on what you think of the interior finish, and auto availalbility. While you're at it I suppose, don't count out the WRX. They have come a long way in terms of interiors and comfort; They aren't as one-dimensional as they once were. But then again, is there such things as an automatic WRX?

There are plenty of Holdens/HSV to look at as well, but the domestics aint so cheap these days.
