Also luv my iPhone 4 and while the Google maps app is alright for finding your way around a strange city/town it would be a VERY small screen for something like OziExplorer or similar.
Far better IMO to get a 7" screen unit dedicated to Ozi etc.

I love my iPhone 4 too - it's just amazing - especially to a guy like me who has never owned anything like it before.
For navigation - check out the Metro View app - it's a one off $25.00 investment. Reviews rate it as being superior to Tom Tom and Garmin apps that cost well over $100.00. I have it - am using it regularly - it's brilliant. ;)
Free upgrades in the future - all maps loaded onto phone - so no using your quota when the app is running - unlike google maps. It also gives voice command directions as you drive.
Yes, contrary the rumours about poor reception, the iPhone 4 is close to being a Telstra 'Blue Tick' device (good for rural reception) when a cover is used. ( I have this on good authority here at Telstra )
Reception is not quite as good as a true 'Blue Tick' device but it's better than phones designed only for City/Regional areas. so thats why it's working well in areas like those above.
Future Apple software updates will not improve reception as the iPhone4's reception is limited by it's antenna design.
I would definitely buy one, but Ive just got a Telstra Tough T90 - good reception but it cant do 1/100th of what an iPhone can !
Thanks Gents. Scallops - mate I will check that out...I dowloaded CMAP for my boat as a back up...$12.00 from memory. I have a dedicated Garmin in the boat but its a nice backup and very handy to have it on the iphone for trip planning. The GPS in the iphone 4 is very powerful unlike the old phones. Have you come across a topo for 4wd tracks that you like?
Cheers
No - I haven't really looked yet though - last time I got to go away camping was at Easter. :(
Here is some info about Metro View....

Keeping looking at iphones, but haven't moved yet. Don't know much about HTCs or Blackberrys.
Is the iPhone really that superior to the others?
I'm just on a cheap Virgin plan - do you really need Telstra to make the iPhone work properly?
mine came with garmin navigator and sum other maps app, the navigator is excellent, very fast at finding you and were your going, and the voice control is very good, i thort it was garbage till i used it,
HTC desier FTW:D
DiscoMick - I suggest you go and have a play with any phone you might want to get - maybe you can't do that with a Blackberry or Desire - I don't know - but you can go to an Apple Store and play with all their stuff.
I came to the conclusion that the iPhone did what I needed - it's basically a portable social computer that is also a phone. The thing about Apple stuff is - its sleek, it works and it sets the benchmark that others copy. Sure, the others might even raise the bar, but they would never bother if Apple didn't place the bar in the first place.
Look at recent newspaper articles about "iPod killer devices" etc. The point these guys miss is this - the competitor's products have only come about because Apple went first and actually made something to "kill".
To me, it's kind of the same with the iPhone.
Well the iPhone4 was activated overnight and I have only managed a quick play today. Fast, simple and really nice screen. Signal at work is usually crap with any mobile but the newest phones all seem to be an improvement and the iPhone4 was no exception.
One of my work colleagues has an Otterbox Defender for his iPhone4 and I have ordered one too. This should keep it a lot more secure from drops etc. The 1to3shop on eBay has these at a very good price and is cheap for delivery. should arrive next week I hope.
The Defender - got to love the name :) - case is a little chunky but it's a good trade off. I also took advantage of the Apple case offer before it closes at the end of September.
Next job will be a suitable ring tone.
Has anyone seen the Sumsung Galaxy, had a play with one in the shop the other day, and it beats the Iphone hands down. Just as easy to use, but it just feels so much better. Would love one, but only Optus has it, and I really need to go Telstra as their reception is the best.
