As groucho posted, the Garrets were coal burners but they had automatic stokers which meant no shovelling of coal and the very reason I’m sorry I never got to work one.

    SMR

[QUOTE=groucho;1312349]The last steam workings at the SMR were truly the best
The 10 class barking up the caledonion bank was great to see.
I was luck to see the final weeks of the SMR the last steam workings

I used to work for this company in 1963 as a leccie. Also looked after all the electrics on the locos and the telegraph lines from Maitland to Cessnock, including all the signal boxes.
Also maintained the diesel passenger carriages.
Nearly run over a number of times on my petrol engine 3 wheel trike. Had to lift it off the rails nearly every trip up the main line. Bl**dy spark plug used to oil up quite regularly.
    Great memories.

    the magic of steam

What a wonderful thread -- there is something about steam trains that brings out the little boy in most of us. I remember when we lived in central Qld. many years ago, on sheep / cattle properties , our family would travel to Brisbane to visit grandparents , I think the trains were the Sunlander north/ south, Westlander and Midlander east/ west. [ from a fading memory] I remember the calls of " paper!, paper! " from the gangers on the side of the track, the passengers would hand the courier mail to them [ the train at times barely went walking pace] , the fascinating conversations overheard from stockmen as they swigged on their rum, the gentle rocking and clickety- clack sending us to sleep ......... sometimes life seemed so much simpler then, or am I just showing my age? Bob the one from Rocky to Brisbane ( and Vice Versa ) was the "Rocky Mail" and in my time was pulled by either a B181/4 or a BB181/4. My uncle would sometimes drive the first leg from Roma Street and he took me for a look-see once. Now for a kid of 8 to 10 years it was like running amok in a lollie shop. I share your sentiments. Also I have obtained another photo of Qld,s one and only C19 which was built at Ipswich and is still in the holding shed at the now workshops museum..North Ipswich.

You steam-heads can still get your fix on a paddle steamer. There are a few working along the Murray. Echuca has the most with three genuine old steam boats regularly running. While the engines are not as big as loco engines you can walk around them and watch while they are running (difficult on a loco).
