What is the meaning of a "Bloke"?

I was only having this discussion with a Canuck au pair two days ago.

The poor thing has only been in Aussie ten months and her family and friends are giving her grief as they can't understand the idioms via Skype and facebook she's already picked up :twisted:

She doesn't even realise she's doing it.

It was great to hear here say "yeah, no worries" and to the littley she was looking after "yes, that's Rick's ute" :D

Generally if you say "So-an-so is a great bloke" That means he's a pretty good man....a good mate.

We had Italian friends stay with us many years ago, and my wife (whose name, by the way, is Sheila) kept calling him "mate", as we do always out here. He got quite confused and explained that to him "mate" meant....well, you know:angel:

After a hurried explanation, he got the gist of some of our Australian "lingo" (language).

A "Bloke" doesn't go to the pub to try to "Ute" a "Sheila".
