    LEYBURN SPRINTS 2010

Anyone here go to Leyburn Sprints this weekend? I went yesterday. Lovely sunny day but a biting chill wind. Windcheater and long sleeves all day. People who had overnighted there said it was a wet freezing miserable night. Bloody cold hole, Leyburn.

As usual, with the way historic racing has gone, too few proper racing cars, and too many tin tops. Flocks of Ford Escort Mk. 1's with Pinto and Sierra engines that they never left the factory with. Early Cortinas that are now allowed to use crossflow engines that once were not allowed. A very interesting and well made Honda engined Mini impressed me with the quality of workmanship. Three Offenhauser midgets were on display only and did not run. Pity. The thirty year rule for historic status means cars that are still in common use are now historic racers, VB & VC commodores, XD Falcons etc.

Lots of coppers hanging around the venue but did not see a one on the road either up or back.

$4.50 for a plastic cup of beer and $9 for a roast beef roll at Webcke's pub is a bit off-putting. No wonder he has been able to build a brand new pub.

Took twenty photos of things that interested me.

Guess its the way things are going Brian. I go to Murwillumbah each year and the vehicles are changing. I also go to Mt Cotton when I know its on and hill climb specials as we knew them are disappearing, being replaced by wrx's and evo's. The young fellas these days think drifting is great.....we spent so much trying to stop drift......it costs so much to stage an event like Leyburn with public liability etc maybe it will become Leyburn drift........................Mt Cotton drift.......Murwillumbah drift.......

The public liability insurance should have always been recouped by increasing the spectator entry fee. CAMS in their usual blundering incompetent way added it to the competitor's entry fee. At the time, entry fee for Lakeside historics for my Appendix J went from $85 to $185. For this you got about four short races. I don't know what it is is today but no doubt CAMS have found ways to increase the charges above the inflation rate. My co-owner and I parked the car in the shed in protest and it has stayed there since. A few others did the same. Although the co-owners son has shown some enthusiasm and has been slowly refurbishing the car slowly for 3-4 years now. We shall see.

    A good relaxing weekend

Yes I went out Friday arvo with a friend. A great weekend lots of old cars dating back to the early W's and with over over 200 competitors it had some thing for every one and bloody cheap for this type of event , camp sight 420 for 4 of us for 2 nights and a 2 day entry fee of $25.
I will go again next year.

Sorry mate but how is driving 4WD cars on these sprints going to start a drifting comp? Both those models are the least likely cars that you would try to drift, they are infact the perfect vehicle to try and reduce it....

Sorry to seem like I'm having a go guys, but I'm just confused!

    Cheers,

Great majority of Escorts had Kent engines, 1100, 1300, 1600. Probably 95% or more. The 1600 came with the Mark II. I bet if you check the chassis numbers of all those Escorts racing with the 2000 engine you will find they were originally Kent engined family cars, and not entitled to the RS2000 badges stuck on them.

Would have liked to gone to the meeting, but I didn't know it was on

I went to the Shannons Speedfest at Lakeside a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed some good racing. They had "Godzilla" putting in a few quick laps which was good to see.

    Leyburn 2010 photos.

First time I have tried to post photos. Hope it works. Photos taken yesterday at Leyburn sprints. Only took photos of cars that interest me. No tin tops. The Offy midgets were on display only. 76 & 99 wil be running at the RNA on September 11th. The Qld. Vintage Speedcar Assn is holding their annual back to the Ekka day as a day-night show this year, 1.00pm to 9.30pm. Blue No.5 alas, has not been run for some time and would appear to be a show car nowadays.
