The Cane Toad And The Goanna

This weekend we were up at the Range shooting at 500 yds.
Now this mound has had a resident Goanna for years. Pops his head out ,looks at us and goes about his business.
This time however while we were watching it was acting strangely shaking its head and twisting and turning. Eventually it shook this small toad from its mouth and continued convulsing. After an hour or so it went into a coma. This morning I went back, It looked dead but still moved a bit, so I took it home. Rang Australia zoo, they said ring a vet. Vet said they could do nothing, but to keep an eye on it and water it if it recovered.
Sadly it died this afternoon. I say sadly because we were all quite fond of it . It was a fixture so to speak.
This really opened our eyes as to the toxicity of Cane Toad Venom.

Unfortunately the reptiles aren't adapting to the toad fast enough, unlike the Crow and Magpies, said really.

When I Googled Cane Toad Venom I came on a post by Kimberly Toad busters I think they were called. They were doing their best to halt the onslaught with Dettol.
Dettol has been outlawed for the killing of toads by the WA authorities.
    How dumb is that..
They claim it harms the environment. Couldnt do more harm than these bloody toads surely.

Dettol works an absolute treat on the little mongrels. I'd rather have the place smelling antiseptic than overrun with Canetoads.

I have in a spray bottle and use on the buggers.Needless to say I have few toads. What I don't get the crows do by turning the toad over and gutting him.

One of my relatives had a photo of a death adder and a toad. The death adder had bitten the toad and killed it but the toad had also killed the death adder. It is amazing how strong toad venom is.

I will ask Mum if she can remember who had the photo and if they still have it.
