Non LandRover Tech Problem- 92 3.0L Pajero V6 petrol cutting out

Hey guys, Stacey has a 1992 3.0L V6 Petrol Auto Pajero. Not that long ago it started cutting out when hot, replaced the coil and ignition module and all good....until now.

The other day she was leaving work and barely got out the gate and it cut out.

I replaced the plugs and leads, dizzy cap and rotor button, idle speed motor and put a new fuel filter in.

Its still doing it, but now instead of just cutting out it idles and runs fine for a period of time and intermittently power seems to be cut to the engine and it cuts out for a split second and then comes back to life. Often it will cut out so many times in quick succession the engine just stops. When its cutting out the tacho drops to zero for a split second and the check engine light comes on. There is also a loud ticking sound from some sort of relay or something in the passenger footwell near the ECU.

    Any ideas?

    Matt

I think you already found the probelem. The EFI relay is near the ECU and will cause the symptoms you describe. Also while there, open your ECU and look for leaking capacitors, this is a common fault across all Mitsi makes between 89 and 94. They had a bad batch of capacitors which can cause a whole raft of similar issues.

    cheers

Hi twitchy, yeah mate it has a CAS, its in the Dizzy.

im going to pull the ECU out tomorrow, spoke to an ECU specialist in Melbourne and they reckon its what Strangy said, leaking capacitors.

Anyone on here a wizz with electronics and reckon they could repair it?
