We just bought one.
2000 model, 190,000kms, 5sp manual, 2.0l 4cyl petrol, new tyres. Rego till December, 12 mth AVN warranty, $5k
Looks remarkably tidy, well serviced, and well maintained. Gearbox and tfr case seem fine, has a decent low range by the feel of it.
Got a few cosmetics and tidyup bits to do before we pick her up next week.

Daughter's happy, but she still wants a SWB series.
Once she learns to drive a bit. we'll upgrade

Seems like you got a lot of car for not a lot of money. Well done. Don't know about the Series upgrade though. The tough little Korean just might worm its way in to her heart.

I was just about to recommend an early 4 cylinder one, quite economical, the V6 is thirsty, SIL had one traded for a Cerato,have friends that have 4cylinder units no problems both of them are daily drivers, one doing the Caboolture-Brisbane shuffle, the other Caboolture-Nth Coast-Blackbut runs,happy with them, but the V6 too thirsty.

A friend of ours had one of the long body Sportages like you just bought.

They had a recall to replace something to do with the radiator fan. It could come off and mince the radiator. Maybe it broke its blades or came free from its mounting.

Whatever the cause my friend did lots of kms with his so he found out the expensive way before the recall was issued.

I think he sold his a few years ago with 200k kms or more with no general problems other than the above.

They also had problems with their auto locking hubs but not sure if that showed up on his or not.

Only 4wding his saw was Double Island a number of times. I don't recall him ever getting stuck.

The only thing I didn't like about it was leg room in the front. There wasn't much of it.

My father in law has had one for what must be almost 10 years now. In many ways these older ones are like the Subaru L series. They are very cheap and plasticy inside and out. He's had a good run with it, but then he doesn't drive off-road and probably polishes it every week. By no means a great car but there are certainly worse. It's comparable to a RAV4 of the same vintage but probably hasn't as much get up and go.

I'd go a Subaru over a Kia though.

The German electronics technician and fuel injection, car computer expert who finally sorted out all the built in Ford **** in the Two in One Falcon has this opinion of Kia. Try saying this with a heavy German accent. "Kia are phocking nightmare, Audi are phocking nightmare". I gather there are some makes/models that he makes the sign of the cross at.

He has a list on the office counter of makes and models he would prefer you take to someone who needs the work. Some he will forthrightly tell you to take away, he will not touch them. All electronic singing and dancing Range Rovers are accepted but I got the feeling he would like to speak to your bank manager before commencing work.
