I would also like to know about true tracks front and rear vs TT front and full detroit rear. There would not be a durability difference, only an off road performance difference, and given that the TT is easier on your transmission because its not a complete lock, it may be a better option.

Also its not just a matter of the detroit being clunkier or noisy, its a matter of you not being able to apply any throttle without it being locked, so in a roundabout under throttle your inside wheel will spin on the spot.

Varying prices = because they can! Just like - a TD5 injector costs $1500 locally or $500 ex-UK...

As for TT vs a REAL locker in the rear - no contest. If you lift a wheel F+R with twin TTs, you will go nowhere. However with a TT front + locker rear you will keep moving.

TTs are good, but no substitute for a locker.

I have just bought a detroit auto locker from Lucky8 for the rear of my d1, cost $598 US plus postage $60 US, cost me around $720 but at the moment with the dollar so good it will be about $692 AUD posted to your door:cool:

i also got a quote from Bill at Great Basin Rovers, he was cheaper again, and i was disapointed i didn't grab one off him:angel:
His price was $574 US and $50 postage US that converted comes in at about $655 with the dollar the way it is!!

Our company has an acct with Eaton (importers of detroit drivelines) and we are presently importing directly from the states as they can't match prices without buying more (cheaper) stock.

As isuzurover stated "Varying prices = because they can! ".

I have a small importing business (nothingto do with cars or trucks sorry guys) and we import as incredably cheap prices with a 400/500% mark up (not saying that sort of markup is normal or listed here).

It is so good that we often turn the items around and send them back to the UK cos we can still sell them cheaper then the UK shops!

What now? Can't apply throttle without the locker "locking"? Who told you that rubbish?

My Detroit auto locker in the rear is totally unnoticeable on the road, you wouldn't even know it was there except for the sticker on the rear window. Fitting is important - it came with instructions about getting it right. So I wouldn't take any notice of stories about problems with them on the road, if I were you.

Isn't it right that a True Trac is basically a LSD and so not as good as a locker?

I assume the importer's markup would be at least 100%, is that right?

It's a torque biasing diff, can't remember the bias ratio off hand and as has been stated a few times already in this thread needs some friction from the spinning wheel to bias torque across the axle to the wheel with traction.
if you lift a wheel that wheel will just spin and you'll go nowhere, unless you have TC (where i'd reckon it would excel) or lightly left foot brake.

It is the more user friendly, day to day option of the two but everyone that's fitted a new generation soft locker No-Spin/Detroit seems really happy with them.
I've only ever driven cars with the old style ones (back in the early nineties) and I didn't care for them one bit, clunky, noisy and very sudden in their characteristics they were a bit of a handful in the wet and needed a dedicated driving style (called committed :D) so it looks like the addition of the rep-load springs and probably changes to the dogs has really tamed them.

Dave Ashcroft reckons the Quaiffe ATB is much nicer made and stronger than a Tru-Trac, but a Tru-Trac just works fine and is a hell of a lot cheaper.

the opp lock guy told me, I actually tried to disagree as I do have a full understanding of a diff and some understanding of a detroit, but he would not have it, it is totally locked under throttle even in corners!!
