    Golf GTi & R Mark 6 reliability?

    Gday all,

This is prompted from another thread in the D2 area where I went off topic. On that thread a VW mechanic was kind enough to give me some of this thoughts on the Mark 6 Gti (made in Germany unlike many other VW products/BMW products these days..).

Anyway, I have heard of some horror stories with the Mark 5 electrically, electronically and in fit and finish problems and rattles. I see from the reviews that the inside trim has gone right up because VW realised they had dropped the ball. But what of the reliability and rattles. I bought my wife an Accord Euro a year ago and irrespective of the quality of the road there are ZERO rattles or squeaks and the thing has been flawless in 35,000k's a true beauty.

I see articles like this Car quality rankings | Toyota poor quality where VW is picked (along with rover of course...) for special mention and wonder if that is with the South African Mark 6's or Golf Gti also.

Has anyone with a Mark 6 golf got any dramas or annoyances...or not...and can you let us know which you have Gti, R, comfortline etc.

    Cheers

Its possibly a bit tooo soon to tell!
Our 2 Golfs have had no rattle and no issues.
My archtect has a MKVI GTI but only for a few weeks now so he is still getting used to it but its his town car as his normal transport is a R8.

Honda is a great car, I seldom hear any issueexcept that they are a Honda and not a Golf if you know what I mean.
    Cheers

My SIL bought a golf T/D as she does allot of K's and she loves the thing, she hasn't had an issue and it does 50/50 town rural miles.I'd get a Polo as I like the look of the front end but thats a personal thing.A mate of mine has the Honda euro and the only complaint he has is the service/parts cost. They are the best Japanese car by far IMHO. Thanks people. Yep the Accord Euro is a special piece of kit. I love the fact that it has a raspy exhaust note from its twin exhausts that the other Honda sedans miss out on...for example the detuned version with a single system in the Accord. When it takes off hard it sounds like very Alfa like.

Its good to hear the above reports as to the Golf cause i have always liked the looks, go and handling of the Gti, but the ongoing stories I have heard and the customer surveys worried me - whilst LR is even lower again (but not by a lot) in those surveys, for some reason I always thought it was easier to live with in a 4wd and especially on that was always so far ahead of the other brands in terms of sheer technology.

    Cheers

Agreed mate. They get very good write ups (have for a long time) but often there is the little note in the article about quality issues plaguing them. The surveys are done on a fault per car basis.

I had for some time thought about giving the D2 semi retirement to be the dedicated 4wd and tow car in favour of a fun run about - hence the Gti question, but in the end I will find it hard to give up the laid back driving of the D2 which is has usable torque and a nice shifting box for a big vehicle...you can take off in second or take off in first and change to third without anyone in the car noticing.

    Cheers

When we had our Audi TT and R32 Golf, as much as I tried to drive slowly, stepping out of a Disco or my RRC into them I always got a ticket.
My main reason for selling was basically I had no points left, was on 1 good behaviour demerit point.
They are just rockets and the exhaust note on the R32 is freakish.
My wife now actually prefers the 2.0tdi that is also quick but so much more driveable and even that I can get caught out.
I know its my right foot thats doing it, its my fault the thing is that when behind the flat bottom steering wheel and the car just wants to go, its so much fun.

So, not sure what I am trying to say but basically, they are all great and as always you get what you are paying for.
