some people will not work outside of prison, let alone inside.
It's a good idea, but a lot of the prison no hopers have no idea about earning a wage outside of stealing and dealing drugs. As already mentioned the Do Gooders will veto it. You know, last Clean Up Australia Day I was driving past the local weekend detention centre and there they all where ( the prisoners) sitting on the front verandah having a good old chat. Why weren't they out helping to clean up the place!!!!![]()
You may be putting the law abiding citizens out of a job.
Hi,
it is a tricky one.
To balance using 'cheap' labour for jobs that no one else will do, vs teaching life skills that will stop recidivism.
I believe Unions put a stop to prisoners making post-bags and other heavy canvas items for Govt use.
There is no 'one size fits all' in prisons. Some should never be released, some should not even be there, and a whole raft of positions in between.
We can't even "send 'em to the colonies" any more.
cheers
Hospitals in NSW used to receive their bread from the Prisons bakeries and their linen from the Prisons laundries. Prison Industries used to make to order and sell venetian blinds and all manner of other items. However some moron decided that it was anti-competitive because private organisations like the Canadian "Tip Top" company couldn't compete with the slave labor pay rates the prisoners received. Now Hospitals have to buy commercial bread and hard labour seems to mean pumping up on the gym equipment in the yard.
Just what we want released back on society, muscle-bound poverty stricken ex-cons!
Yes and before someone gets all bleeding heart on me, I worked for the Prisons Medical Service at the Long Bay Complex, so I have some insight on the issue.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
I dont think its a bad thing.
