I must admit I thought all the chat from the commentary team about how well they build these cars nowadays to me sounds like drivel.

Having watched the crash like everyone else ten times over I was quite shocked to see major parts of the car coming off of it before it had even crashed or hit anything.

The following cars had quite some damage from being struck by broken panels and debris flying off of the crashing car before he had even left the circuit. To me that says the replacement panels they put on these cars to make them weigh less are built to flimsy.

I'd actually say after watching that crash while the role cages are great the external panels are the opposite.

But that' exactly the point. The cages are essentially an exoskeleton designed to protect the driver. The panels are cosmetic and for streamlining.. they are not structural.

Yeah, when one of the doors fell of in pit lane. Seems they just sit on the hinge and are not a part of the structure anymore.

Not quite, hitting that sand sideways is hitting something quite substantial as the stuff is very deep, that's why the car tripped over and barrel rolled six times.
If it was grass, concrete, bitumen or maybe even shallow sand it would have just kept sliding without 'tripping' over. (but continued right through to the other end of the chase)

Nothing wrong at all with flimsy body components, they do less damage to anything that may hit them when they come adrift.

Open wheelers for years only had flimsy fibre glass or later kevlar/carbon/glass bodies literally hung onto a space frame or aluminium monocoque set on with a few dzus fasteners and O rings acting as elastic bands, it's only when carbon tubs predominated that the tub became the outer body work too.
These days things like Formula Fords and Sports Sedans still only have fibre glass bodywork hung over a space frame, and the glass is flimsy

That last stack was a set up if i ever saw it because they would all have ran out of fuel lets put a car into the wall bring out the saftey car then we wont have to re fuel its a set up . Why dont they race the real base models throw in some jap stuff and have a real race not this souped up crap . But I still had to watch it , loved skipey on the track , And it should be run on the October long week end . Its all about Telecast $$$ and beer consumption these days

Sacrifice 4th place to ensure 1 2 3 have enough petrol to finish,exactly what I thought/said when it happenedThen again Im a Ford fan so why wouldnt I

The prang on the first lap shows exactly why they cant race base model cars at that speed,he only walked from the accident due to it being a purpose built race car.
