Thread: Mitsubishi Broken Chassis

My brother has an 07 Triton 3.2 diesel. Never had a problem with his (except for 5 steering columns in 80,000km). Yesterday he drove up to Barrington - no offroad as such just very badly potholed dirt roads. The car was unloaded except for him, his missus and two kids and has standard suspension.

When he got home he had major dints in the back of the cab where the tray had hit it when being bounced around by the potholes. When parked there is enough room to put your hand in between the standard tray and the cab but over rough roads the chassis is clearly bending enough (noting it was unloaded) for the tray to hit the cab. Something is not right with these Tritons.

Just look at the shape of the back of the cab and front of the tub. Even the stylist knew they were going to bend.

Didn't happen in Oz but in Thailand. Not a 4X4, and yes, Thais do tend to overload. Still ...

And that one is bog stock and probably doesn't do anymore 4x4ing than pot holed roads.

On the previous Tritons problem in this post, it was found that airbags were the contributing problem and it was found that it's not just the Triton that is affected, all dualcabs are apparently having this issue when fitted with airbags to carry more weight.

The problem is that when airbags are fitted to leaf sprung vehicles, it centralises it's weight carrying to directly over where the airbags are fitted, increasing the area of unsprung weight, which intern causes the chassis to bend just behind the airbag.

The airbags had nothing to do with it,dual cabs are the vehicle of choice simply because wagons are too expensive,a base model Prado/Pajero is 70K so people buy utes for 40 and then fill the poor things to the roof with crap they don't need,throw a camper on the back and fill it with more crap they don't need and wobble off down the highway acting like mobile roadblocks until the vehicle overheats or breaks a diff or snaps a chassis and then it's everyones else's fault because these new fangled electricidy vehicles are as good as the old mechanical injected four speed ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz. Just a thought, when people load up their vehicles for a trip, does anyone weigh the vehicle to check they are not over weight? Bob

Yes I do..

Was often well over GVM but got it down light now.

RTA departments are now locking vehicles involved in accident up and weighing them in some parts of AUS.

On several national highways I have been pulled over and weighed when towing the boat or camper.
