    Caught this today

    Gday All,
We trawled up this today, and even tho it has cost me about 30mins in paperwork, due to it being a rarely trawled species, it was good to see it as I haven't caught one in about 10 yrs..Yes it did go back alive..
I only know them as a Wobbygong, but am sure someone will correct me if im wrong

Looks like I will get a please explain from Canberra when they get my logbook and i've logged a wobbygong in the rare and endangered section..

Wow someone in AFMA may have to do some work for a change, I be dragged over the coals for that effort of not reporting it by its correct name.

Saw these a lot when I was diving in FNQ. Always known them as a Wobbegong. Apparently the only shark that can bite their own tail! (This maybe an urban myth...)

Used to squiilions of them diving around the rocks at Coolum and also Pt Cartwright.
Nice logbook work, they're about as endangered as a Series 3
Had one stuck to a mate's leg once, they clamp on and you've just about got to cut them off.
Pretty funny - if it's not your leg!

Yep can relate to that, had a stingray bite one of my crew's hand once, he was being an idiot and got what he deserved, funny as hell if its not you..
They are classed as a rare trawled species, so the paper trail is a mile high, time, date, pos, how long trawled, it goes on and on..

As best I can tell from that photo Ill go with:
    Orectolobus ornatus - Ornate Wobbegong

    Fishbase is a great reference...
    http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Spec...ary.php?ID=759

Doesnt seem too endangered per se... but AFM obviuosly has different criteria?
I presume he was an unlikey bugger not to be shot out by the TED or outswam the nets?

Ean what happens if it was just a lemon shark (would there be any paper work?). If so I imagine on less honourable trawlers the deckies slide it over the back and call it for a lemon shark with some gravel rash? Is the system all self assessment?
