    Nothing is all new ideas re motors.

    The motor in my old ute is from the 1970`s. It`s a diesel and as I have the head of at the moment, I have noticed it does not have pre combustion chambers in the head. Instead it has them in the piston as in the same as the latest common rail diesels. Only this is a indirect injection. So way back in the 70`s they were already using some of what is touted as latest technology. Also goes some way to explaining why it goes so well. My old ex Toyota 2H diesel and our ex Mitsubishi Delica had pre combustion chambers. Certainly not as efficient as directly into the cylinder. Seem to be the way with motors and cars. Some car mob bangs on about some new innovation and it is found to be old ideas rehashed.

    Pre-chamber engines are used in passenger vehicles because they run quieter particularly at idle. They are usually hard starters when cold so usually have glow plugs, some other form of pre-heater, or ether injection.

    and precombustion chambers allow for multiple grades of fuel to be used once the engine is running.

    Both direct injection and precombustion chambers feature in the 1930s book I have "Oil engines for Road, Rail and Air Transport" and in "The High Speed Internal Combustion Engine" 3rd Ed, Ricardo rev Glyde, 1941.

    These show that these basic concepts (and many others) are far from new, but also make clear that the success or failure of various design features is very much dependent on both detail design and manufacturing materials and methods. (This is probably the case in many other fields as well!)
