    Roundup - interesting new research

In case anyone is interested - a new study has found teratogenic (i.e. birth defect inducing) effects induced by roundup - at levels lower than allowed in GM foods.

    The paper:
Glyphosate-Based Herbicides Produce Teratogenic Effects on Vertebrates by Impairing Retinoic Acid Signaling - Chemical Research in Toxicology (ACS Publications)

A commentary on the issue is here:
    Roundup Study
Study Shows Monsanto Roundup Herbicide Link to Birth Defects

    By F. William Engdahl, September 30, 2010

A major new scientific study has confirmed growing conviction that the world’s most widely used chemical herbicide, Monsanto Corporation’s Roundup is toxic and a danger to human as well as animal organisms. The latest scientific research carried out by a multinational scientific team headed by Professor Andrés Carrasco, head of the Laboratory of Molecular Embryology at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School and member of Argentina’s National Council of Scientific and Technical Research, presents alarming demonstration that Monsanto and the GMO agribusiness industry have systematically lied about the safety of their Roundup. Roundup in far lower concentrations than used in agriculture is linked to birth defects. The health implications are huge. All major GMO crops on the market today are genetically manipulated to “tolerate” the herbicide Roundup.

Glyphosate was patented by Monsanto in the 1970’s well before GMO was commercialized, as a so-called broad-spectrum weed killer. It is typically sprayed and absorbed through the leaves, or used as a forestry herbicide. It was initially patented and sold by Monsanto under the trade name Roundup, which also contains non-disclosed added chemicals the company refuses to divulge for “trade secret” reasons. As of 2005, 87% of all US soybean fields were planted with glyphosate-resistant varieties of GMO soybeans and sprayed with Roundup.

Because the seeds of Monsanto Roundup Ready GMO soybeans or other crops have been manipulated solely to be “resistant” to Roundup herbicide, while all other plant life in the field is killed by Roundup, farmers using Roundup Ready seeds must also purchase Roundup herbicide, making a captive market for both seed and chemicals.

The problem with this cozy arrangement, aside from the fact that Roundup-resistant “super-weeds” are emerging as a new biological catastrophe, is that Glyphosate has now been demonstrated to be linked to birth defects as one of the most highly toxic substances in agriculture. The US Government’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), nonetheless continues to regard Roundup as “relatively low in toxicity, and without carcinogenic or teratogenic effects.” In the United States the US Government notoriously relies on test data from Monsanto and the agribusiness industry to make safety rulings, under the 1992 doctrine of Substantial Equivalence which asserts that GMO seeds are “substantially equivalent” to ordinary seeds and thereby need no independent health or safety tests. While herbicides are treated slightly different, the fact that the agribusiness industry influences much of US Government policy has insured the most benign regulatory treatment of Roundup to date.

    Alarming results

Now a new international scientific team headed by Prof. Andres Carrasco and including researchers from the UK, Brazil, USA, and Argentina have demonstrated that Glyphosate, the main active ingredient in Roundup causes malformations in frog and chicken embryos at doses far lower than those used in agricultural spraying and well below maximum residue levels in products presently approved in the European Union.1 The Carrasco group was led to research the embryonic effects of glyphosate by reports of high rates of birth defects in rural areas of Argentina where Monsanto’s genetically modified “Roundup Ready” (RR) soybeans are grown in large monocultures sprayed from airplanes regularly. RR soy is engineered to tolerate Roundup, allowing farmers to spray the herbicide liberally to kill weeds while the crop is growing.

Carrasco presented his group’s findings at a press conference during the 6th European Conference of GMO Free Regions in the European Parliament in Brussels. He stated, “The findings in the lab are compatible with malformations observed in humans exposed to glyphosate during pregnancy.”

Widespread reports of human malformations began to be reported in Argentina beginning 2002, two years after widespread aerial spraying of Roundup and planting of RR Soybeans was begun. The test animals used by Carrasco’s group share similar developmental mechanisms with humans. The authors concluded that the results “raise concerns about the clinical findings from human offspring in populations exposed to Roundup in agricultural fields.” Carrasco added, “The toxicity classification of glyphosate is too low. In some cases this can be a powerful poison.”

The maximum residue level (MRL) allowed for glyphosate in soy in the EU was raised 200-fold from 0.1 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg in 1997 after genetically manipulated Roundup Ready soy was commercialized in Europe. Carrasco found malformations in embryos injected with 2.03 mg/kg glyphosate. Soybeans can typically contain glyphosate residues of up to 17mg/kg.

In August 2010 an organized mob violently attacked people who gathered to hear Carrasco talk about his research in the town of La Leonesa, Chaco province. Witnesses implicated local agro -industry figures in the attack. Viviana Peralta, a housewife from San Jorge, Santa Fe, Argentina was hospitalized together with her baby after Roundup spraying from planes flying near her home. Peralta and other residents launched a lawsuit that resulted in a regional court ban on the spraying of Roundup and other agrochemicals near houses.

Now - please commence with the usual. Can I suggest:
"scientists will publish anything to get publicity"
"lots of things are bad for you"
"I have been drinking a cup of roundup a day for 50 years, and I and my kids are fine"

I haven't read any of the papers yet, but was warned quite a few years ago that the 'domestic' versions (eg. Roundup 320) used a Schedule 5 poison in the wetting agent that was included in that version.
This was need to ensure takeup in a plant due to the minimal strength of those versions.

The commercial versions like Roundup Max, etc. don't have an included wetting agent, it's something the spray contractor or farmer/employee adds only if needed.

Was talking to a mate in SA on Sunday who is an agronomist for a major Stock and Station/farm supplies/produce chain and he said the amount of glypho going out the front door ATM is staggering thanks to the wet weather.
They've had at least 40% of their average annual rainfall in the last three weeks so the weeds are going nuts.

and FWIW the water coming down the Murray ATM is also filthy with ionically bonded glypho.
Can't remember the chem, it isn't my strong suit, but he said the water wasn't nice.

    Remember the DDT kerfuffle.

    DDT

We had a neighbour who spent time poisoning blackberry with "blackberry and tree killer" (245t being the active ingredient IIRC) without taking adequate precautions whilst pregnant. Her deformed baby was still born.

Just reminded me of a cockie near Dalby Qld. I rolled a car there and he came to help at 3am. top bloke. Anyway I made a return trip with my father to collect stuff from the car a month later from Melb. He was proud of his piggery and showed us around. His porker got feed with an additive out of a sack, it had cobalt etc in it. He proudly said he spread it on his kids breakfast cereal , he proudly told us that what was good for the pigs was good for the kids.
And I don't think he was pulling our legs either.

Hopefully there'll be some some more/followup studies in the future.

Monsanto released Roundup Bi-Active in the lead up to the Sydney Olympics as it has little to no toxicity on amphibians.
It was developed in response to finding the endangered Golden Bell frogs that live around the Homebush site and was used extensively there so they wouldn't be harmed, in fact I think it was the only herbicide allowed on site.

It's the only version we've used for years for that reason. (and we use very little, I've had the same 5 litre container for too long now, it's probably out of date)

    roundup

This hits a nerve with me , I'm sure you all know of Agent Orange, Vietnam Veterans are still dying from the effects of this to this day. Please bear with me as I quote from the Research Officer from the ACT. Vietnam Veterans Federation branch.[ rather long winded]
    R.A.N. Personnel have the highest incidence of prostrate cancer of all the service group from the Vietnam era. Why? Their prolonged and unrelenting exposure to Agent Orange in their drinking, cooking and washing water. In short, members of Ships Companies deployed to Vietnam waters during the war were exposed to Agent Orange toxins at unnacceptable levels by consuming potable water which had been produced by evaporative distillation of estuarine Vietnamese waters. This report, in the main has not been challenged by D.V.A. the report goes on in detail, too long for our forum, however one statistic is very surprising----the mortality rate of Vietnam Veterans from prostrate cancer is 53% higher than the Aust. average, lung cancer 29% higher, and dioxins have been directly linked to these diseases. The breakdown between the services was even more surprising;

    Army 1.00%

    R.A.A.F. 1.12% - 12% ABOVE THE AVERAGE

Navy 1.37% -37% above the average.

The report goes on, and none of it is good news for any Vietnam Veteran, but a point I would like to make is --- if Vietnam Veterans are falling off the perch this many years after the war , we pulled out in 1975, what is ahead for the people of Aust. who are subjected to the run off of toxins used in our farming community today? Who knows what toxins the Chinese farmers use on their products we import? Sorry to be morbid, but I'm one of the ones waiting and wondering when my number will come up--to hell with it , lets have a beer! Bob10

I forgot to add that this report is a good reminder that all insecticides and herbicides need to be handled with care and appropriate respect.

The last two phone calls to my agronomist mate have wandered onto stories of the some of growers he deals with and the lack of understanding and common-sense of some of them.

Their handling and use of their chemicals, and the results have to be heard to be believed, and most of those chemicals are much, much nastier than glypho.

What we often forget is that some of these same chemicals are available from the nursery (in diluted form) for the average home owner/gardener to control their weeds and Mr and Mrs homeowner often aren't aware of the appropriate PPE and use guidelines a 'pro' user does.

    Ben,
(just because no body has stirred the pot yet)
First though - my suggestion is to sell Monsanto shares that you might have

Funnily enough that article is a little inflammatory - press releases are like that eh!
I haven't read the article yet - I want to but have some foliage mitigation to perform in the next months and was gonna use Roundup. The bit that annoyed me a little in the press release was:

"Carrasco found malformations in embryos injected with 2.03 mg/kg glyphosate. Soybeans can typically contain glyphosate residues of up to 17mg/kg."

Injecting the test solution at a rate of 2mg/kg is very very different to a residual in a food product of 17mg/kg. I believe the press writers WANT punters to think "LOOK! at just 1/8 of the concentration we eat - babies come out funny looking"
    BUT
To get a concentration in the embryonic circulation of 2mg/kg by eating soybeans would require a huge volume of beans at 17mg/kg all consumed both within the embryonic period (~first 10 weeks of pregnancy) AND consumed within the biological clearance rate.
By the looks of the evidence the reported human abnormalities have been the result of aerial spraying which would possibly give huge doses of toxin to pregnant ladies down wind.

BTW I philosophically disagree with the antics of Monsanto and other GM manufacturers cornering market share in agriculture. But I also disagree with sloppy, inflammatory reporting of scientific results
