Thieving scum!

We have a very good security camera system in our store with 1 camera looking at the outside of the front door. This roller door is heavy steel with a $115.00 padlock on each side.
1 night 3 or 4 kids (8-13) came along with a star picket & tried to jemmy the door up, didn't work. They went away for a bit then came back with a crow bar, didn't work. They went off again & came back with an axe, didn't work either.
All up they came & went 7 times, each time with different tools stolen from different places around town.
For the 1 night they were charged with 7 attempted B&E's at the store + 9 other B&E's.

Slap on the wrist & back in the store smiling at me the next morning.:mad:
So, I banned them for life, now if they come in I can have them charged with trespass.
usually just throw them out, less hassle for me, police & the court won't do anything anyway.

Must be great being a kid, no responsibility for actions.

as much as I hate to say it , your proberly lucky thats all they did..didnt trash the inside, knife the seats or something...or worse still you walk outside and get bashed by the BMX gang...dont laugh it happened to me in bibra lake (WA) years ago, went outside and about 10 of them jumped me, then rode off on there push bikes, the cops laughed when I told them..

Some bugger stole 1 windscreen wiper off my disco in darwin earlier this year..Atleast they left me 1 i guess..

to play the devils advocate, who do these kids belong to?

I have a nephew around 10 or 12. He gives his mum a lot and his Dad a bit. I would not put this family in the stereo type family category that we like to put kids origins from.
But this nephew has the potential to be one of these thieving kids. Actually he has so much love and time spent on him from his parents and grand parents he should be completely opposite.

I reved him a while ago for doing something to his brother, so he doesn't have much time for me anymore. Maybe he is a bit scared if me these days, perhaps his is just growing up, or maybe both.
But before we lynch these kids, turds as they can be, it's a big and complex picture to deal with. I'd image a lot of it just growing up. I don't think many of us are angles on here, and my kids life is sure going to be a lot more complex than mine, as mine was to my fathers.
The kids who don't work out respect, feelings, pride, worth and so on eventually go to the big house.

I agree courts need to be firmer, with less chances, and perhaps jail about 10 times harder than present. Just removing people from society who don't get it doesn't seem to be a big enough deterrent. I don't mine the idea of loosing a hand for steeling in principal, but I hate the idea of my nephew missing one.
Maybe life should be life, 15 years should be 15 years, and those rocks....well theres the sledge turn them into sand, then barrow it over there, you have nothing else to do.

Thats the issue newhue, we are taking more and more kids home to what I would describe as a good home environment. We are having more and more teenagers reported missing aswell. The problem I see is that the current generation of early teens are bucking the sytem, mum and dad tighten the strings and clamp down on the behaviour, as they should, and the kid jumps out the window and buggers off.

We had one 14 year old girl in town cause so many problems in one family it drove her mother and her grandmother appart.

Its a 60acre property, mum and dad live in one shed kitted out as a house with the 14yr old girl and 1 other kid. The grandparents live in another shed. We get called out for continous domestics because the 14yr old girl is saying that her mum is threatening to burn her stuff, being physically violent (she wasnt), and then running up to her grand parents place and playing them off each other. By this stage grandma has sided with the grand daughter and turned against her own daughter. This goes on and as per domestic violence legislation we are forced to apply for an avo for the 14yr old girl to protect her from her mother.

Wait it gets better.

Grandma and grandad add another room to their shed/house and its agreed that the 14 year old grand daughter moves in with them and her mother and step dad are thrown off the property by her grandparent.

This last 5 weeks when the 14 year old girl realises that grandma and grandad are more strict than her mother and step father so she moves back in with her parents.

This last 2 weeks and after being told she couldnt stay at a friends place on a school night (pretty routine answer) she climbed out the window and ****ed off to some random womans house in town.

Mum reports her missing, eventually the 14yr old rings and says where she is (we had knocked on the door a few minutes before the call but they hid in the bedroom and didnt answer the door, total waste of our time, like we dont have better things to do), mum then says, "You have until 6pm to come home, if you arent home by then and abiding by my rules your stuff will be at the front gate for you to collect and take where ever the hell you like".

What do you do when you try and do the right thing and set rules and they run off the rails? You cant just let them do what ever they want because they will end up in the same place. Damned if you do and damned if you dont.

I don't like to watch to much rubbish on TV, but from what little I have seen of "the worlds strictest parents" show, it appears an external advice/force that is supporting seems to give some kids a jolt they need. Given not all of them wake up, and unfortunately police, courts, juvenile aid don't seem to have respect in young peoples minds. Certainly the Y genners I have employed anyway.
It's hard to see where good external advice/force comes from, other respected family members, friends in society, time. But I do really think a lot of young people today are missing good face to face social interaction and team work, they watch to much crap on TV and internet alone. Kinda makes them believe they are the centre on the universe more than they already do. Kids that play sport, or belong to scouts, clmbing clubs, mountain bike groups, kayaking clubs, dance studios etc all seem to do much better than others who don't.

As we use to do it in the Old South Africa... many years ago... and its changed now as well..

Strapped to a bench, salt water soaked cloth over the bare bum and then 10(+) hits with a quince cane... taking time between every hit on the bum..

well it seems tough for todays day and time BUT those days it worked....

one bloke (16s-17s years old) at school was caught breaking into a local cafe, he was caught and got this treatment... i betcha that changed his life and he didnt go down the robber path when grown up...

BUT then again maybe letting kids rule is the norm ? I have had some property damage as well being rural. ferals from the suburbs having joy rides and destroying post boxes, scratching cars and destroying wheelie bins... as if that proves you are tough ?

I dont know either, we get so many parents coming into work and asking if we can sit down with them and their son/daughter and having a talk with them about their behaviour. Im not sure what is behind it all.

My Father in Law has a saying that he uses called Latch Key kids..
He means that today we have a society where both parents work, and the kids are left to come home after school let themselves in and occupy themselves till the parents get home..
With no one watching these kids and time on there side, some, not all , seem to turn to stuff like graffetti, badging cars, and general troublmaking with no real punishment, so the intensity increases till more criminal style acts start to rule..This seems to be about the time the parents first realise the problem..The legal system is soft so the punishment doesnt fit the crime so it breeds contempt and it snowballs...

Sure some kids out grow it, some dont get in it from a start, but the fact that both parents are now out to work and the home front is 2nd place certainly cant help..I argue with my mother in law all the time about it being a boy only thing,Which she seems to think it is, but am sure that in some cases it is...

When I was younger the centre of the neibourhood was the local park for us kids we all met there, played with the footy or whatever, and when it started to get dark we all went home..We have a park across from our house and all it gets used for is the bloke next to it to hit golf balls into ...

Every generation is different I accept but once the core household comes second, as it seems to today, then the whole family structure seems to suffer..I have been luck so far as my wife has been able to work around our girls and there school and after school activities and has been able to encourage them with sport/ social groups etc, but I see plenty of my girls, friends whose parents dont have the time or interest in that part of their kids life, and it goes down hill from there..

I think you have hit the nail on the head there Ean. My question is though, what makes kids from a seemingly good family that go without nothing choose the lift of petty crime and generaly thuggery? Further more what distinguishes these kids from those who choose to entertain themselves without engaging in this behaviour?

Does it lead back to the parents from the time they are born? Are these values not placed in these kids at an early enough age to equip them with the ability to say "No, thats wrong" and turn on the telly, or do homework instead?
