Just got back from a mountain biking event in NZ. Our hotel had over 30 rooms and was packed with about 120 mountain bikers. One night the local scum did the rounds and grabbed everything they could, including a fair amount of gear and one bike. Everything that was even vaguely visible or accessible was grabbed or taken from locked cars.

It probably didn't help that we'd all been riding all day and drinking all night. Apparently they normally come back for anything they couldn't get the first time. Having said that, it would have been suicide for them to have another go.

Fortunately the vehicle was undamaged, and they didn't steal any CDs or more expensive stuff. Very strange...
Go to the local 'settlement' you will find all your stuff under the third sheet of corro on the left

Speaking of theiving scum ... back in 2000 a friend and I drove to Melbourne to film a rather large event for a doco we were making. We had put up at an inner city Hostel/Backpackers ... luckily we made sure all our film equipment and cameras were in the room with us.

It is funny what you hear at night that you later recognize as the moment you got your car broken into ... only later do you put 2 and 2 together. The next day we woke to find our car broken into and I had about 30 cassette tapes stolen that were left in the car in a travel case. They didn't get much else but the violation was visceral!

I realized later that I knew the people who did it as they were staying at the hostel with us ... they knew who we were and that we had camera gear and were likely hoping for a score in the car. I hate to say it but they were young male English backpackers who had been drinking all night at the pub next door and when they came back into the street late that night I could hear their voices below our window. I had no idea at the time they were chipping us but later on I figured it out ... time + opportunity and their proximity.

I heard one of the bastards egging his mate on saying "what's the matter, are you scared?!" ... yup, but I was hearing this in a half dream state and was already just about out like a light. We never caught up with them because we didn't SEE exactly who among them it was but we knew they were staying with us and who the basic group were.

Scum is too kind a phrase for them ...

    Simon.

It was indeed. I know of Freddo (saw him race at a recent 24hrs) but not sure about the rest. Tim from FTR was there - saw him at the luge. I didn't do the race (I leave my single speeding for the road) but got some good photos. Spent about a week riding Roto and did quite a few shuttles. I rode my Pivot, which was fine for the conditions, and had a ball.

The punishment for petty theft like this needs to be more harsh, the slaps on the wrists that most of them get really shows that crime does pay.

Having said that, since joining the thin blue line I take everything of value that i can out of the car. I might not be able to stop them breaking in but i'll make damn sure the mongrels leave empty handed.

Unless they want a dirty old socket set and some screw drivers
