Make drivers pay for peak-hour travel: report

    Dumbest Idea ever ?

The report recommends free off-peak travel on public transport. (Reuters: David Gray, file photo)
A new report on Australian cities has recommended free off-peak travel on public transport and charging drivers for how much they use their cars.
The ADC Cities Report contains ideas on how to develop better, rather than bigger, cities.
It will be used to help the Federal Government form a national urban policy for Australia.
Ways to improve public transport are high on the agenda, including free off-peak travel.
Professor John Stanley from the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies says cities need to be designed so that the need for travel is reduced
He says introducing road pricing and charging drivers for how much they use their cars is a better solution than building more roads.

"If you're travelling for example at peak hour in a congested city, you'd pay a lot more because of those congestion costs imposed on other people than you would if you were travelling at off-peak times during the day," he said.
"There's now plenty of international evidence that the most effective way to deal with congestion quickly is to put a price on it.
"This is the only way we are going to do anything seriously and long-term to reduce congestion."
Professor Stanley says road pricing should be debated in the community over the next three years so that people are not financially disadvantaged.
So yes, cities need to be designed better.
    But they aren’t.
So they are looking to introduce a system where we pay to use roads during “peak” times.
Hmm why do they think there is such a thing as a “peak” time.
Could it be anything to do with the fact that people have to start (and therefore finish) work at a certain time.
Maybe you could tell the boss “Mate won’t be in til 11:00 in future to avoid the charges”.
    That’d work, I’m sure.
It’s Ok though because as they say “(It) should be debated in the community over the next three years so that people are not financially disadvantaged.
Hmm it’s not as if charging for something that used to be free will financially disadvantage anyone is it….
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

The whole thing is about A about T, they should provide adequate, efficient public transport where people live so they can easily get to where they work. Once they have done that they should be able to charge fees for driving to work. But as usual the Government wants to put the cart before the horse!

Great work, dont bother fixing the roads, just charge people more to use them.

Why not discount people's registration if they buy a season ticket for State rail or something like that. Something to encourage people to use public transport that gives some sort of reward as opposed to charging people more.

How will free off peak public transport do anything? it might help holiday goers moving around our cities in the middle of the day, it might help the odd person using the train to get to olympic park to see a concert or a footy match but the average hard working Joe Bloggs gets more cash taken out of their pocket.

I live at Redcliffe and work atthe Airport. Public transport is all but non existant.

I apparently have heaps of options.

    1. Drive to Sandgate, then train to Eagle Junction, then 2nd (expensive air train) train to Airport, then shuttle bus to work (as you can imagine this takes forever.

    2. Drive to Sandgate, train to Toombul, Bus to work. (This also takes forever)

    3. Leave home in landy, drive DIRECTLY (no more than 3 traffic lights and mostly on the motorway) to work.

Gee it's a bit of a tough choice.... NOT.

Why the **** should I have to pay for the "privilege" of driving to work ?
I'm already paying Rego and fuel excise and gst every time I buy fuel.

My point exactly Vlad. I used to catch the train to olympic park alot when I was teaching as I took kids to the royal easter show. The only reason we used the train was because a private bus was to expensive, problem is the train takes 1hr longer each way so thats 2hrs gone out of the day because of the train.

I live in Scarborough and work in Brisbane (CBD). I drive to Sandgate and catch the train (parking in the CBD is too expensive to drive). It takes me about 1 1/2 hours to get to work and another 1 1/2 to get home. When I worked in Toowong I drove, it took me about 40 minutes!!
Public transport is slow, unreliable and rubbish.
You are stuck on the train with no control over what happens.

I think maybe that you are all missing the point -

once the peak congestion charge is introduced it can be "privatised", ie sold to some friendly multi national (you know - the sort of company which takes govt ministers out for lunches and pays for their holidays)

.....or am I just a cynic after all
