Public Health. Resistant Whooping Cough/ Pertussis

    G'Day.
Wanted to let you know that there is a nasty new strain of Whooping cough hammering SA and areas of other states. The is NOT the strain vaccinated for! Current vaccination offers no resistance. Paediatric staff have been infected and passed it on to at least 40 babies. They are obviously fully immunised and up to date. As such there is no link to those 'Dirty stinking non- vaccinator bleeding hearts', it's just new.
As per normal pertussis, it may not present with the 'whoop' in older patients, but as flu/ cold like symptoms and has an incubation period of 7-20 days before signs/ symptoms become obvious.
We found out the hard way.
    Cheers, Dave.

Interesting that Health SA hasn't put out a health alert on the subject, only the notifications of vaccinations for parents and grandparents on newborns and one on minimum intervals for vaccination doses???? Health alerts 2010 :: SA Health

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

There has been a few SA Health media releases re whooping cough over the last month. You can read them here:
SA Health confirms whooping cough death :: SA Health
Whooping cough case at WCH :: SA Health
Whooping cough case at Loxton Hospital :: SA Health

Also this from NSW: NSW Whooping Cough Alert - NSW Department of Health

Ah Ha - the plot thickens, it is one doctor who has tested positive for pertussis and that doctor has seen 59 patients who are being contacted and informed of the risk. Whooping cough case at WCH :: SA Health

A very different story to 40 babies contracting pertussis from the staff.

BTW: once again it is the medicos slipping up on their vaccination/immunity status!

Thanks for the heads up Dave,

Am in a constant discussion with a mate at work regarding vaccination/ versus non-vaccination and the effects / non effects / is it good / not good.....

Thanks for the non-biased post with just the facts......
