Proof that regular maintenance is a good thing.

Well, whilst I was away in goulburn both cars suffered from lack of attention because I went from good pay each week to no pay each week. Then when I got out of the college of knowledge I took a pay cut, about $400/fortnight, but thought I could make that up with some casual teaching. Get to work on my first day in my new job, "Sorry, no secondary employment during your probationary period". Bugger, survival mode for 12 months.

Have now been approved for secondary employment so I can do some days of casual teaching now, done a couple already, but been going over the cars making a list of the stuff that I need to get done that has been neglected. Stacey's car is the worst.

First the ECU upped and died, this is after I replaced everything else in the ignition system first. Then whilst pulling the ECU out I find coolent under the carpet, great add a leaking heater core to the list. Got the ECU replaced, $640 for that. Put some bars leak into the radiator to buy me some time until I can get the dash out and get the heater core re cored. Go to sydney to the motorshow on Wednesday, get home and there is quite an amount of coolant gone from the radiator, no water inside the car, wonderful, one of the head gaskets is now gone.

The disco isnt much better, at least it has a new engine. It needs a new heater core, new brake vac advance pump, new module that controls the fan speed for the heater etc, new drivers seat, new seal (4th time) between the transfer case and gearbox, and eventually new suspension.

Im not having a whinge, just need to vent, its my fault its all crept up and hit us at once. Hopefully I can get some casual teaching during this term before xmas and get these things ticked off the list.

The moral of the story and a lesson that I shall definitely learn from is regularly maintain your rig, it saves so much time and hassle in the future.

Geez - no good Ace, sorry to hear about all that - I feel your pain, just got rid of a car that I couldn't keep running - every time I fixed something, something else died. Same as you describe, I hadn't done anything to it in ages, and it bit me on the bum. Funny how some lessons cost so much to learn.

Hope you have everything all sorted soon mate - Cheers - Gav

Thanks gav, yeah, I'll get there. Just working my way through the list.

Once the Pajero is sorted we'll be selling it as we dont have a need for 2 4wd's. Bought the pajero because I was hoping stacey would get more into 4wding, that didnt work so its getting the flick. Bought a VP Commodore project im going to spruce up a bit. Needless to say thats taken a back step at the moment.

the disco wont be going anywhere any time soon.

Well, spent friday ripping out my old steering box and putting in the unit I got on ebay, so far so good. Steering feels alot tighter and more responsive, insides of the old one must be totally buggered.

I also got my stick welder from mum and dads and welded up Discowhites steering damper brakcet that broke after 5 years of torture. My welding isnt the best but its holding up. Next job for the disco is a new clutch slave cylinder, brake vac advance pump and I need to replace the pinion seals on both diffs.

Pajero is getting new head gaskets, manifold gaskets and a service on saturday. Then it needs a new exhaust and a new set of cheap all terrains and its gone. Should be a reliable car after I do all that, its been very good for the last 2yrs, I think its just the age of the vehicle thats causing the issues now.
