    RANGE ROVER COMPANION

A mate has just given me a book, you know, those things with paper in them.

The book is in brand new like mint condition but it was printed in 1984.

    The book, RANGE ROVER COMPANION.

I don’t know if anybody else has seen this book but it’s an eye opener.

It starts out covering all the different development models prier to the first production RR, and thank god they kept developing it.

Some of the first experimental models were hideous to say the least.

The book has just about every bit of data about the RR, from sales figures to gear ratios, wheel and tyre dimensions, even lists the size of the alternator.

The first models from 1970 came with a whopping 36 amp alternator but by 84 they had increased it to a huge 43 amps. ( a D4 comes standard with a 180 amp alt )

It even lists it’s 0 to 60 MPH in 14.4 seconds by 1983, yet it was 13.9 in the 1970 model.

There is page after page of data, but so far there is not one single reference to MPG figures.

By 1984, they had sold 24,711 RRs in the UK, the country in line based on sales figures was Australia, with 7,584, W Germany = 6,285, Italy = 6,149, France = 4,942, switzerland = 4,547, Venezuela = 4,503 and so on.

In 1984, a special edition, all optioned up with air conditioning and automatic transmission cost £18,519.

0-60 in 2minutes 24seconds!!! My series could do that! (well almost!)

amazing that in 13 years they added 1 and 1/2 minutes to the 0-60 time..

(OK Ive milked it enough now, I realise its only a typo! )

Thanks though DriveSafe you're right, its dog ugly!

You may not like it but in comparision to the Road Ranger proyotypes of the late 1950s, it's positively beautiful. You can see key styling cues that ended up in production though.

Just got the Amazon.com app for my iphone and did a bit of searching.
Found a secondhand book for $10!!

It might be ugly but if I had the chance to buy one.....

Wonder if theres still an original kicking around anywhere.

Talking RR old (and new?) in the Prestige Motoring section of this week's Weekend Australian 23-24October is an extended piece (lifted from the UK Murdoch press) on the 2010 supercharged RR as fitted out by Overfinch in collaboration with Holland & Holland... the writer refers to it as a bespoke gun carriage..and he loved it...but true to form on the way home from a highland shoot, something "simple" went wrong with the battery while stopped for a fuel refill and it refused to go...period.. until someone with some nous was able to fix whatever it was in a couple of minutes and get them on their way... tried to get the URL but it's pay-per-view for the UK ...

Oh the price for the bespoke gun carriage? about a quarter mill all up in A$ I'd guess...
