    Hi,
you could slave a flash mounted just over the number plate that would over expose the image around the plate area to the point of being illegible.
    Possibly illegal though.
    cheers

That sounds even better, much more simple than the self darkening plates. Lets build one!! It would be easy to test the concept

I'm sure that you could get the reactive lens in numberplate size somewhere in China and the sensors would be easy. You could even make it environmentally resposible and have it solar powered.
Already have a clear plastic sheet numberplate cover thats laser grooved to deflect flash lights from cameras and make the plate illegible, daylight flash or infrared. Were banned here a few years ago now. You still see a few around but get caught with one and its a yellow licky an hefty fine.

What if someone was trying to receive an emergency or important call from, say a family member though?

Is your peace and quiet (on public transport - where people are perfectly entitled to use their phones) more important?

It was only a few years ago when no-one had a mobile phone.

None of those stupid number plate concealing ideas work. Mythbusters has done 2 seperate sgments on it and they ALL confirmed plain old common sense. A moder radar or laser sped camera ain;t gonna be fooled by some hairspray !!!!! (or special plae covers etc etc etc).
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".
