Blue driving light covers - opinions please?

    Hi Guys

I've a set of IPF's and was considering some clear covers untill I saw a set of blue ones. I understand that the blue is to reduce glare off road signs, but can you tell me how well they work ... should I just stick with a clear set?

    Thanks

    Craig

In my opinion driving light covers are for use when the lights are not turned on. In that case it doesn't really matter what colour they are.

I will even remove clear driving light covers at night to get the best possible light output. My night time driving is between Horsham and Adelaide in my own vehicle, or extensively in outback SA, NT and WA for work.

For what it is worth, blue lights will not be legal either.

The blue filter works by cutting out some light from the yellow end of the spectrum which is the dominant wave length in normal incandescant lamps (as with 'normal' head light bulbs). This changes the light from a yellow to a more 'natural white' light which supposedly leads to less eye strain. However, it also reduces the total available light. Halogen and especially HID lights are much whiter than normal globes and blue filters are generally considered of little value for normal driving conditions. The filters look blue but the light is not. Some people like the the look. I would rather have maximum light.

As for whether you need covers/filters at all, that is really an issue of protecting the lamp. I don't know about IPFs but they are an integral part of Light Force lights and some others.

    Cheers

No vehicles are permitted to have blue lights other than emergency services vehicles.

People on other forums have reported being warned or fined by police for having blue covers on their spotlights, as this has been deemed by the officer to be the same as a blue light.

Even the european yellow fog lights are subject to debate with regards to whether they are effective in fog conditions

I thought blue lights were illegal - but I saw a doof-doof car today with blue fog lights on (during the day - also illegal if there is no fog).

Why don't they ever seem to get booked?

Light blue (or Crystal Blue) filters produce a whiter light than the Yellowish light from a clear lens.

They are legal in all states..

Blue (eg Dark Blue) covers are not Oz legal but are used more in Alpine regions for reflective glare reduction.

In NSW you cannot operate a vehicle with any other 'colour' than white projected from the front, and from the rear, red - the exception being a white light for reversing (yes, i know some older cars - my torana - have the indicator lights operating as reversing lights). The exception for front lights is a yellow coloured light - 'fog light' but foggies should only be operated in adverse weather - what you consider adverse is up to you but they are quite bright and SOME drivers eyes may not adjust as quickly as others which is why it can be a problem. Additional lights - driving lights - can also score you a fine....

You can have any coloured light fitted to your vehicle just so long as you don't use it on a road.

Coloured (blue) lights on doof-doof cars, yep they're ridiculous!

The penalty for using a vehicle with coloured lights operating varies but usually ends with a defect notice....

    Matt.
