    I pulled mine apart yesterday and cleaned it. Upon reassembly it was a first pull start - thank goodness - as the starter cord pulled out.

    If there's a fuel filter anywhere in the line or on the end of it, that may be restricting flow if it's old and hasn't been replaced in recent times. I'm no expert...... it was just a thought . Don.

    Hi,
    I was having troubles with mine running rough. (Greenfields, B&S motor)
    Changed plug, air-filter which did not fix it.
    Pulled the covers off to get to the carby linkages - they seemed ok.
    Pulled the float bowl off - Bingo!
    The main jet is part of the bolt through the bottom of the bowl, and there were bits of fluffy stuff in the bowl around the inlets to the jet.
    Blew it clean and re assembled - it now runs like new again.

    Re aged petrol.
    I have never been able to identify any problems that I could attribute to old fuel, and I regularly store ULP for several years before it all gets used.
    May be the cooler Hobart climate, and the fact that it is stored in a well sealed Jerry-can in a cool shady area is a mitigating factor.

    Answers to my other questions are:

    Main jet is the brass tube in the centre of the throat of the carbie near the butterfly. The brass circle with a little whole in it on the left side of the casting is the idle jet.

    I got a can of carbie cleaner and a gasket for the interface between the carbie body and the backing plate for the air filter. A bit later I will go out and spray some cleaner around and give the jets a little air from the compressor. I will also dump the fuel and put in some fresh stuff. Although as austastar said I too had never had problems with long term storage of fuel.

    nod130 sounds like he may have the solution........


    its obviously starving for fuel........



    there should be a some type of filter/gauze in the tank at the fuel tap.......
    this could be clogged up with dirt and grass from the last ten years of use......
    remove the fuel tap and give it a good blow out and clean and try it again......

    my father had a very similar problem with his mower a while back......

    No tap or fuel filter. When I pulled the carby the fuel flowed freely from the hose until I stuck something into it and held it up higher than the tank.

    Are the fuel lines hard? I've had one small engine where the fuel line hardened and cracked a little - it would let air in that would make it run badly.

    take a look inside the tank at the fuel outlet.........
    there has to be something in the fuel line to stop contaminants from making their way to the carby......

    there was no filter or even a tap on mine, yep I was surprised at that.

    I thought there was a gauze filter on the end of the fuel line where it sits in the tank.

    I know with mine it doesn't take much to block it. Normally it's a blade of cut grass that finds its' way into the tank.

    Byy the way, who out there is still running a Scott Bonnar? Both my old man and I run 45 series with the 21" wide reel....
