they are used to it, an intersection like that in Australia would cause havok. People here are to impatient, the "Don't let anyone through" gene kicks in and the need to get to our destination 2 car lengths earlier is far more important.

Did some backpacking around rural china a couple of years ago. Took me a while to realise that beeping your horn is being polite there

Us Aussie drivers would last about 2 seconds on the roads there.

The basic rule is the bigger and faster you are the more time you can spend on the wrong side of the road aiming at the oncoming traffic. I watched vehicles (including plenty of 3 wheel trucks!) launch off into the "footpath" sending people flying everywhere to avoid the truck overtaking the car overtaking the bike, overtaking the tractor, overtaking the scooter, overtaking the bike, overtaking the bike with a trailer, overtaking the four wheel bike with a trailer and about a tonne of gear heaped on it all on a two lane dirt road with rocks the size of footballs lying everywhere.

Also everyone has their drivers window blacked out while having no tinting any where else on the vehicle!

    Cheers

generally they drive around 30- 40klm as well. The only rule I could work out was go behind. Which also means you are in front of something else. I think they like the horn....well because they have one.
    Confused..we were
Must be an asian thing, but after 3 months riding our pushies around the place we had become the same. I remember riding down the middle of the road reading the Lonely Planet guide, and heading towards an on coming truck. Both of us passing all the people and clutter that takes up a couple of meters on either side of the centre white line. Just before we collide, I swerve into join the clutter and don't think too much of it.

They do have accidents and plenty of them, just at low speeds so they are not catastrophic. We saw lots of lost loads, and everyone seems to overload everything, even the cart.
I think for me however I'd rather be bored stuck in traffic with the air con and radio. Opposed to the excitement of 100 people going 15 ways all with their horn on full bore.
