Am I doomed to drive a commodore wagon??

    Hi All,

Our much loved D1 V8i has been surrended to our insurance company as it was deemed a write off because of the storm we had here in WA in February
It was our family vehicle (for 7 years) and while it was getting on (in age) it was our family runner, looked excellent and I believe was value for money when we purchased it

The payout from the insurance company ($8K) we can buy a low Ks (100k) 2006 Commodore or Falcon wagon but they are an ugly vehicle compared to a LR (of any discripton).
We don't want to borrow any more money from the bank, but have seen a D2 TD5 and have found a 2001 with 225K on speedo for $13K supposedly reduced from $17K
I will strech our budget, and I'm not sure about the rest of Aust, but in WA anything over 183K from a dealer does not come with a statutory warrentee.

Vehicle externally and internally from what I could see (after hours) looks in excellent conditiion, I've not approched the car yard as yet to see if it has a log book history?

    My questions are:

(1 What are the main issues that I need to check with early TD5'
(2 Is the milage high for age and what next major cost will I be up for?
(3 Does the price seem reasonable or should I put in an offer based on no
    warrentee?

    All your opinoins appreciated....

PS I don't want to drive a Commodore or Falcon even if its only on the weekends.

    Baggy

Most insurance companies let you rebuy your vehicle if damaged by the hail. Why don't you get it back? What's a few dents?

A roof, bonnet and a few panels shouldn't be that hard to find, however if you PM Mike90RR you might happen to stumble across a D1 that's becoming available at a pretty good price.

    Cheers

Hi Baggy...In my experience 13k is expensive. 17k was crazy. I had a quick look on red book and for the age it's done quite high kms, only barely within "average" and they suggest around 7-9k for purchase.
If you can look into it further and are comfortable with it put on your poker face and say you'll give him 8k. Be prepared to walk away and see if they chase you.

Otherwise there is a '99 Disco II on Carsales asking 8.5k?

    Sarah

p.s. I drive a commodore...not a wagon but we couldn't get a rear facing car seat in the 110 for my son...I understand your desire to avoid it

    Hi All,

The reason for handing back (D1) to the insurance company (I don't mind a few dents) is that they (insurance company) will only re insure it for the salvage price paid.

Any extra work done ... replacement panels, bonnet, and mechanical (on top of) the salvage price paid they will only ever pay out the salvage price.

Also as Sarah from (LSD_ Automotive) pointed out Red book value on D2 TD5 is between 7K - 9K so getting 8K (for my D1 V8i) was the best offer I was ever going to get.

I'm only waiting now for monies to come in from Insurance (2 weeks away)
and if the D2 TD5 still there will contact them and see what happens.

    Appreciate everyone's opinion,

    Cheers
