Diff guards ...
Bought a front diff guard yesterday ... bloke mentioned that sometimes with extreme flex they can pop their bolts and fall off ... I am talking the round type, not the QT plate type. Anybody heard of this happening or heard of anybody losing a diff guard under flex? He mentioned it can be a good idea to attach an extra little bit of wire to them as insurance if they pop their locks.

I have never heard of front diff guards coming off but then the topic is not normal conversation around here either...
I have had one on my 110 for some time now and when I installed it I was concerned about it getting hit off on the rocks I frequently bump into so I ran a bead of silicone around the inside of the diff guard before installing. Once done up tight, the silicone set and binds like the proverbial to a blanket... I am going to have to run a sharp blade around between the guard and the diff to get it to come off if I need to remove it.
Cheers,
Phil

Great idea Phil ... didn't think of that. I have installed it now and buggered if I'm going back to that again, but if and when I do take it off next time I'm going to follow up on your silicon idea.

If the axle is flexing you have issues!!!
However, diff guards can be ripped off by rocks.
It has never happened to mine, as I made it a VERY tight fit. On the 110 I just replaced the diff pan with an 8 mm pipe cap
You can tack weld them on or use u-bolts (around the diff) or wire.

Ben,
Just the messenger mate ... the bloke did say it CAN happen under extreme flex - he was emphasizing extreme. The bloke is a long time Land Rover mech and was merely passing on what he had been alerted to by some of his customers. I would imagine that something may be lost in translation here ...
