I go on camping & fishing trips with a pretty broad range of people - can't ever remember a trip where I was not the only Landrover driver.

Personally, I couldn't give a toss what anyone else drives. I make my choices based on my own opinions - not on anyone else's. And as Dave said very well in his post, the D2, and the D1 V8 before it, and the Rangie before that, have always spoken for themselves in many ways. The "knockers" are usually the first ones to grudgingly admit that they may not quite have got it right.

About the only person who has ever really got up my nose a bit was a well known "4WD Tour Guide" who stated that he prefers not to have Landrover owners on his tours, as he has had to "rescue" more Landrovers than any other brand. He was pretty quickly told, by me and a number of others, that we were not likely to want to participate in one of his "tours" in any case, given his know it all attitude. I have heard lately that his business is travelling rather slowly at the moment.

I've been pulled out of the bog by Toyotas, Nissans and even a Holden Rodeo. But I've pulled at least an equal number of other brands out as well. So who really cares - after all, it's usually more the driver's ability than that of the vehicle that determines who will get through (or is stupid enough to attempt) the worst spots.

And if anyone really thinks that we are "****ing our own forum up with stupid arguments that do nothing but perpetuate the belief amongst other 4x4 owners that Rover owners are a bunch of precious *******" - well they really ought to have a look at some of the other forums around. At least on this forum, the faults of Landrover and our Australian distributor are pretty frequently and openly discussed - can't see too much that is "precious" about that.
    Cheers .........

When I bought the Discovery, every guy at work, NONE of which own a 4WD, bagged it out. Now it was well at the bottom end of the price bracket and while I thought it may need some work (eventually engine replaced and gearbox rebuilt) it still didn't cost me more than one at top price and now it has a new power train. I did it all myself and also worked on some of their cars at the same time.

Yet they still can't see why I would "persevere" with it with all it's problems. Best of all it the 18yo who just bought himself a clubsport and it's $4000/pa insurance bill and chews 2 tanks a week given the way he drives it, yet he lives 8k's from work. And I can get 13L/100 even with the 4.6.

Oh well, not only do sheep follow sheep. They also get pushed against cliffs by kiwis.

I never bag anyone,it's always the people that don't own or have never owned an LR that start the trouble. It's not just cars either,I've always found the person with the loudest voice generally has the least knowledge. Pat

I may have been the only person to tow a 2.2 tonn dual axle road van (road tyres and clearance too..) from Amity to Flinders Beach campsites on Nth Straddie when it had not rained for a while and was very cut up Towed it in my D2 with bog stock everything - 02 V8 manual, traction control only, not even a front bar.

There were 2 knockers with us who were watching waiting for me to bog it really badly. They both came up later shaking their heads as I was moving it around in the campsite in low range, and commenting that they could see the traction control working as I was driving it through the cutting and then up into the campgrounds and just couldnt believe it. There were no more knocks, but just the odd, "bloody techno stuff" type comment, or similar (it was pretty much brand new at the time).

Generally people play ok these days.

    Cheers

I try too, but I know that eventually someone will say something derogatory about Land Rovers.

I didn't buy a Land Rover because it is a Land Rover, and I would not buy a Toyota because it's a Toyota either, we bought our 4X4 because that was the best car we test drove at the time, simple as that.

I play nice to a point

Perhaps he did know what he was talking about.

    Maybe you misheard him.

Is it possible that he said, "Yep, some 4x4 companies that build a 4x4 with an open rear diff are on the ball ...that tells me all I need to know about their engineering"?

Perhaps he was trying to make the point that lockers can be a bit of a blunt instrument added to overcome deficiencies in the design of a 4x4. Maybe he meant that he has nothing but admiration for a 4x4 company that can get the engineering of things like weight distribution and articulation right so that they don't have to resort to lockers to make the vehicle capable off road.

I just offer that thought in the spirit of tolerance ands understanding that this thread is advocating.

My regular 4wdriving friend has a HJ47 Landcruiser. We openly rib each other about our choice of vehicle. We also pull each other out of trouble when we get stuck "having a go".

after neatly trouncing most of them on the open road off road and then again at the bowser apparently Its still not good enough because its pommy and its not lifted locked....

or my other favorite... the idiots who cant seem to understand that I gave up the super cold aircon the extra heavy sound insulation and the luxobarge seats with 30 cup holders and a DVD player with the electronic engine and the auto box that can do 140kph so that I can comfortabley drive with my windows missing, listen to the vehicle and when Im going slow enough the surroundings and drive it without the distractions that modern manufacturers seem to think that you must have in a car. I can also fix it on the side of the road and I don't care if it gets dusty or dirty. I can just hose it out (and often do)

Its a different vehicle its not made for fat assed American's its a utilitarian vehicle designed for people who not only KNOW how to But actually want to drive that gets me and my gear from a-b cheaply and effectively regardless of the road conditions.
    Here Here!
I took a couple of mates to a canoeing spot 40 k's south of Grafton from the Gold Coast in my 300tdi Disco a recce for a long weekend away paddling and 4wd'ing. One drive's a pristine (read anally spotless) 80 series and the other a Pathfinder. I copped an absolute bagging all the way down and all the way back on "why did you bring the Landrover, if I had known I would have worn a hat and scarf so no-one would recognise me" After we did 630km in a day and only put $60 worth of diesel in it, you couldn't wipe the smile off my face whilst they stood there in amazement at how economical and comfortable it was. I have never let the ******* forget it either with gentle jibe's on the UHF when traveling around.
