Hi everyone,
this will be out first decent break camping in the off road Caravan, the only problem is most of the group we usually go with has had to pull out while they wait to harvest their crops. The problem is they are the ones that usually arrange where to go.
This leaves us in Orange for several days over Christmas before heading off for a week with a couple of the relo's in thier off road camper, they aren't to keen to go more than two to three hours away from Orange which is fine but they don't seem to be to sure of any good places to go other than the usual dams around Orange.
While I'm not that keen on parking next to a bloody dam with everyone else, camping somewhere near water does sound like a good idea.
If anyone has any ideas they would be very much appreciated.
cheers,
Terry

Dunns Swamp is a bit over 2 hours from Orange and is an award winning campsite apparently.
Dunns Swamp camping site - 4x4 Earth Australia for 4WD Tracks
says don't go there over peak periods though
just wondering what nice camping spot anywhere in the country wont be congested.....
About an hour west of Orange is Nangar National Park. Very pleasant spot for a couple of days. Currently featured in the Jan 2011 edition of 4x4 Australia. Here is a photo of the campsite:
Unlikely to be many people camping there. Recent heavy rainfall may have had an impact. There was major flooding in Eugowra. You can pick up a good map of the park at the entrance/information point that shows walking tracks and roads through the park.

You have a few options depending on the weather...
Abercrombie River area. There are a few spots off the Trunkey Ck-Goulburn Rd, particularly next to the Abercrombie River on the south side of the bridge. There is camping at the Caves also.
The Bridle Track (on the Macquarie River north of Bathurst) may be hard to access because of the land slip and also is not caravan friendly.
The Ophir Reserve north of Orange may be an option?
The Wolgan Valley (Newnes) is usually quiet over the Xmas holiday period and has plenty of camping space plus things to do (and if I wasn't now living in WA, I would offer to show you around!).
I would not recommend Dunns Swamp (east of Kandos) at this time of year as it will be packed out.
Nangar NP as suggested could be a good option.
May be worth ringing say Cowra or Blayney Visitor Info Centres to see if there are any camping reserves on the Belubula River around Carcoar, Millamolong etc.
The dams will be packed this year due to their finally being some water for skiiing...
Good luck.
Cheers,
Chris
Thanks very much Chris you have pointed out some really good spots close by that we will keep in mind for future long weekends away and thank you to everyone else who mentioned some great places to stay.
cheers and merry christmas to every body,
Terry
All good sugentions above and I will spending Christmas just out of Orange myself.
That area in general has had a lot of rain of late and their is a lot of damage in general. I would suggest that you ring the relevent people before heading out just to make sure you can get their
