    placement for a I Com 440

    Hi Guys,
Just scored a ICOM wanted one for ages, it's a 440, so the hand piece has the channels on it. Now i need to fit it.
My biggest worry is it getting wet because we hose the defender out. When we get back from the beach sometimes. How hot does the unit get would putting it in the big centre box between the seats be ok. Any one put electrical gear in the under seat boxs. I know the ecu is there.

    thanks guys

    Hi Fatcat,
I have the same IC440 as you. I mounted it inside the centre console too. I was a little nervous that it'd get too hot, but having stuck my hand in and felt the temp dozens of times, I haven't yet feared a problem.
The cradle is quick release so removing the base unit is easy enough as well if you don't wish to mount it inside the console.

Mine is mounted on the front inside of the console, but the vehicle is a County which has a slightly different design of console-its larger at the front with space under the tray section. I drilled an inch diameter hole in the base of the console (plywood by memory) and routed both wires down by the passenger seat to the battery.
The socket for the handpiece is currently loose beside the driver's seat with the excess cable under the transmission tunnel carpet. I just dump the handpiece in the console tray till I work out where to put the mount.

    Hi isuzutoo-eh,
So you have not run yours to the ignition, i used to have my stereo with a switch. So it could play without having to put the ignition on and burning the points on my old L300 van.

I mounted mine under the console box. I had to raise it up so there wasenough clearance. The cords go under the matting and to the fuse box. The plug for the hand set it to the right of the fuse box. The handset is mounted to the left of the instrument panel.

Correct fatcat, the leads go straight to the (2nd) battery. Wouldn't make a lot of difference if powered through the accessories circuit as it is not switched with the ignition either on my vehicle. The IC440 has an inline fuse for protection thankfully.
