    Phones Out

Wonderful for Christmas - about 1100 this morning all the phones in the area, mobile as well as landline, went out and are still out.

Has anyone tried to lodge a fault notice via Telstra's website? It is possible, but among the mandatory information is a phone number you can be reached on - how you are supposed to supply this when every phone within twenty kilometres at least is out, is not clear. Also, it seems to be impossible to advise them that a mobile tower is out, or to advise that multiple phones are out. In short, it seems you can only report carefully prescribed situations, not anything out of the ordinary.

To add insult to injury the email response tells you to call 132203 if you have any problems!

    Typical Telstra John....

The sooner they break it up the better off it will be IMHO. They are just as bad as the banks.Every 5-6 weeks we are get faults and have to get a tech out here, oh and try getting them on the phone. I live in suburbia and can't get broadband because of there crap lines, so have to use wireless which is twice the price. Better of buying a few cans and some string mate....I wish we didn't have a swear filter.....

And which company will be any better out where John lives?

All the telco come lately are very happy to sell services to customers in the city, but name one company other than Optus, who has bothered to to lay any copper? (And Optus didn't lay it near John.) They all rely on Telstra copper for landlines and ADSL and what ever the new infrastructure company that gets to own the copper in the ground, they will still be the ones repairing it and you can bet West of the ranges it won't be any improvement in service.

I won't be voting to split the company unless the Government pays a lot of money.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Well said.

Which is why I am with Telstra where I live.

Have no choice on power provider here and that was off from 2pm til 4pm today due to a lightning strike.

Don't think you'll be getting a chance to get a vote.
You're right, all the Johnny come lately's in communications, power, gas, water and public transport are only interested in fleecing the users and not interested in developing infrastructure. When the government sold us Telstra they hatched the biggest con of all. They sold us what we already owned.
All the services an d utilities should have remained in public hands and if the wanted to privatise, they should have just sold off franchises of revenue collection.
And National Broadband, don't get me started.

If the failure is as widespread as John says you can back it in that Telstra will know from the equipment and traffic monitoring capabilities built into the system. You can also count on everyday people like you and me being called away from their family and Christmas festivities to fix it so that we can ring our friends and relatives for Christmas. So how about a bit of thought for those whose Christmas is ruined to make someone elses more enjoyable.

Well actually as a Telstra Shareholder I do get a vote on it! But as you say all the vested interests and people Like Sol who got millions of shares for naught, will obviously vote to fill their pockets a little more.

I bought the shares (T1) and keep them only because I wanted it to stay in the hands of Australians. How stupid am I!

Spot on mate. I'm afraid that many, many Australians have taken over as the "worlds best whingers" from the POMS. In a way if those whingers had felt the GFC like the rest of the world did, they would realise just how good a country they have the privilege to live in.most of our woes such as communications, blackouts etc are caused by an act of
"mother nature" and if you try and control "mother nature" you are riding for a fall. Rant Over.

As far as I can ascertain, nothing is happening to fix the problem - certainly Telstra is producing only automatic email responses, with no information whatsoever available. While it is possible that something is being done in the background, they are certainly keeping it secret from those affected.

If indeed people are called away from their Christmas festivities, then they are to be thanked, but perhaps these thanks might be more forthcoming if any information at all was available on what the problem is, and whether anything was being done to fix it. Instead of which all I get from Telstra is idiotic requests to disconnect all except one phone to isolate the fault, as if this could possibly be a solution when all the phones in the area are affected, and furthermore I have already advised them that I have done this.

What these people fail to realise is that it is the total lack of information that is frustrating as much as the fault itself. This applies whether it is a phone out, a road blocked, a power failure, or a train or plane delay.

As far as splitting up Telstra goes, the problem was with the original sale, speaking from the viewpoint of someone west of the ranges. The introduction of competition was obviously only ever going to help services in the major cities, at the expense of the cross subsidisation that provided services outside these areas. On the other hand, as a government entity, Telstra was grossly inefficient, opposed to innovation, and acted as the monopoly it was. With privatisation, anywhere outside the cities it has remained almost entirely a monopoly, with the further disadvantage that it no longer has its worst excesses constrained by politics. I see splitting it up as making no difference here, and again being only an advantage in the cities.
