Drove a Range Rover Sport today, "Oh What a Feeling"

Having at last driven one, I and I must say my wife are both interested in buying one. The lease is running out on the BMW X5, and I can't see buying an other one at what they are charging. The option is to pay out the balance, and keep what we have, or buy something else of comparable quality. We went for a look at BMW today, and I suggested we also look at the Range Rover Sport. Off to Trinity Land Rover in Cairns. We took a twin turbo 3l diesel one for a spin, and the improvement over the 2.7l is huge. Other than the somewhat vague steering at slow speed, it was a dream to drive. Not quite as sharp in it's ride and handling, as the BMW, but the roads North of Cairns could use some "smoothing out". Both brands have a dealership in Cairns, so service would be comparable. Is there anything to look out for? Any options that are "must haves"? I want to keep with the diesel, as fuel costs are a concern. Both the BMW, and possibly the RRS would be base models, with a few extra's to personalize it, as cost is also something to consider. I know this sounds a bit snobby, but I'm actually not, and I will be keeping the 110 for my daily driver. This will be my "work" car, that my wife will drive.

Any feedback would be welcome.

We drove the 2.7 D4,then the 3l D4,then the 3l Sport.The difference between the two D4's was amazing.We found the sport just didn't have the room for long trips,although the wife liked it the best!
All three were amazing vehicles & a massive improvement on the D2.They are actually in a class above the D2.

As for must haves,dunno,e diff is what i would add to the D4,not much else,they are all pretty well equiped.There are a few things that would be good if you were towing.

Room probably doesn't matter to you as you are used to the X5.

The D2 will be going next yr,so that is why we are looking around.

Ken,
After buying the D4, monetry wise could not justify the extra for the 3.0ltr (would of loved it tho') & the 2.7 was adequate for what WE needed.

Things i would like to have now after living with the vehicle for a few months would be Keyless Entry. I would of also liked Cold climate pack-Heated seats etc. but not really needed for Cairns

Apart from that the vehicle is really nicely equipped.

Hi Mudnut, My son has an '07 Supercharged petrol V8 Sport. It goes like the proverbial shower of **** and is a beautiful machine to drive. Only downsides have been front balljoints, leaking front diff seal and leaking sunroof. All of these appeared at low K's and not much help from LR in rectifying them. Amazingly it gives good fuel economy 11-14 L/100K depending on driving style and is a whiz for overtaking. Nice vehicle.

the 4.2sc is nice to drive but the tdv8 is even better,

the v8 is so smooth and once you learn to drive with all that tourqe its so much better and hardly revs over 2300rpm,

but you cant go past the 5Lsc sport in dynamic mode and your foot pushed well deep into the carpet

A shame they have dropped the TDV8 from the range,

Hey Zute,
Don't think they provide 18" wheels for them 19" come standard. Think it has something to do with the brake calipers being too big. I still have the 110 Defender for playing off road anyway.

Hi Garrycol,

I considered the TDV8, and Townsville have one in stock. However it will be my wife's car, and I have to blow out the carbon from the exhaust and turbo on her X5. Can only do this when she is not in the car, as I'm going too fast!! I think the TDV8 would be overkill for both of us. Price is also a consideration, as the TDV8 commands a much higher premium. ($160k)
