G'Day Fellas.
Thanks for the input/ sympathy and wishes.
The story so far:
Just replaced the engine oil heat exchanger and refilled with a coolant flush to clean out the remaining water/ oil emulsion.
Set off for a trip up to Toowoomba yesterday. Got as far as 1km from Redbank plaza on the Ipswich motorway (60min drive time).
Vehicle faltered, picked up again then the computer cut the fun completely as we rolled into the emergency bay.
Little bit of steam coming out of the bonnet. Top hose has popped off at the engine end : ((
Let it cool for 40 min then veeerrry slowly trickled water into it to refill over another 60min.
Fired up again, running a little rough (assumed the worse, a cracked head and lost compression)
Limped into redbank to stop at the shops (shade/ parts/ food etc) but engine stopped again just outside. Fuel pump fuse kept blowing.
Managed to raise the Blknght and he talked me through a few checks (Thanks Mate).
His diagnosis was that the pump had siezed and offered his second handy as a sub.
One the train and out to daves place, then back to the vehicle to refit.
Refitted and pumping, but no fire. tried a few things over the next few hours but only a nearly flat battery as a result.
Didn't fancy leaving the car alone so camped for the night.
More to follow:
So cursing that I had removed my hammock from the car and had to 'sleep'on the seats, I settled in for the night.
So, restarted the fun this morning. Still nothing, removed the pump to check for gunk/ mis fitment. Refitted still no go. Battery now flat.
Captain Rightfoot Steve offered to come down with the nanocom to faultfind. Thanks again, again, Mate.
My lady managed to get a good quote to tray it home ($196 for an 2 hours round trip, Western towing, top mob) so went with that to get it back to the tools/ parts and my bed ; )
Put the charger on and had a kip.
Fuel pump still seemed to be cavitating, so with threat of a darn good thrashing if it failed to fullfill its'purpose of starting, went through the purging procedure again. Success!!!
Stable idle, no cavitation in the coolant to indicate a cracked head. Cool!
Still some air in the fuel system, so cut short the test to avoid another seized pump.
So, the post mortem:
Coolant lost, fuel returned to the pump too hot until it seized.
Cavitaition prevented starting until I properly purge the system.
Will empty and clean the fuel tank as there is a bit of gunk due to being off the road for 6 weeks sourcing and replacing th eengine oil cooler.
Any similar experiences?
Cheers Dave.
