An overseas company can not charge you gst.
This would be an import tax at (presumably) 10% of what?

If I buy something for $200 the value stated by the supplier is usually nothing like that, say $20 and it is a "present".

How do "they" work out what something is worth at the moment when applying to to an item over $1000?

Gerry's out. Doesn't want it anymore. He's running scared because of the public backlash against him and realises that it will cost his company more than if he had kept his trap shut.

I’m not sure what are the exact motives behind those retail chains, for their push for GST to be applied to imports but I personally think there should be GST applied to ALL imports and in many countries.

I export and most countries have a mandatory Sales Tax, GST, VAT or what ever you want to call it, on any and all imported goods to those countries, the GST is a lot higher than here.

Furthermore it’s small manufacturers like myself that are being forced to try to compete with unfairly cheap imports.

I’m not complaining about cheap imports as such but why should they be able to be sold here without GST while Australian companies have GST applied to everything they sell here.

Whats good for the goose should be good for the gander!

And gerry hasnt given up was announced 2 days ago the retail traders ass has joined thats another 450 retailers. How they would enforce it? thats the only reason the govt hasnt done it yet because it would be hard but not impossible. If you were to get regular "presents" from os then you would soon get a visit from aussie customs even now and then be charged gst at the aust retail price for what you get

The govt's view is that for low amounts such as GST on parcels with an invoice value below $1000 it is not cost effective to collect the relatively small amount of GST that would result.

Say I import a parcel of small tools value AU$600, air mail postage $46 which I do regularly, several times a month. These tools attract duty at 5%. So the gov. collects $30 duty and 10% GST on $600 + $30 + $46, $67.60. So for a return of $97.60 they have to notify me of the parcels arrival, securely store said parcel until I receive the notification and either present myself at the International Post Office or request the parcel be sent to my local PO. Someone has to assess the amount to be paid and handle the payment. This would be running at a loss.

Now if the gov. was to do this with all parcels, imagine the storage facilities needed and the staff!

BTW there is a customs declaration signed by the suppler at the moment stating if it is a gift and its value the fine for a false statment makes it worthwhile for the govt. I like my cheap imports too so hope it takes a long while for the taxman to catch up with the times

But when you take into account that this figure is multiplied by millions of similar sales every year and the amount is not so small.

In other countries, the organisation transporting the product, also adds additional cost to the product to cover the cost of collecting the tax and forwarding it on to the government.

The sooner it’s done here the better it will be for ALL Australians. Just think what GST pays for!

gst is applied to goods sold in australia, when you buy goods OVERSEAS the said goods is not sold in australia there for NO gst is to be applied to the said goods ?
the big companys (leaches) can see with the flooding going on in queensland and the profits are out of this world with everyone needing new goods , think about it , of course they will do every thing they can to prevent people from buying overseas and where will they get their goods to sell, overseas !!!

Here is a reasonably comprehensive list (as of 4 Jan 2011) of the retailers involved in the push for GST on online overseas purchases:

    Angus & Robertson
    Borders
    David Jones
    Dotti*
    French Connection
    Harvey Norman
    House
    Jacqui.E*
    JayJays*
    Just Jeans*
    Mimco
    Myer
    Nine West
    Peter Alexander*
    Portmans*
    Seed
    Smiggle*
    Steve Madden
    SuperChef Warehouse
    Target
    Witchery
National Retailers Association members (3700), it seems that the various associations want to keep their members identities a secret.
