    Question Cool to be kind.

Hi guys, I am planning a big trip (clockwise) around Oz in May, starting in Victoria and then West via Lake Eyre.
I have an awesome 93 Defender but it does not have air-conditioning. I think I might need it in the deserts but I don't want to drop big bucks just to stay cool as I just had to have a new transmission, transfer case, clutch, rear axle & assorted bits (all sent from the UK, of course).
That took about $5.5K out of my budget so an air conditioner is a luxury.
Does anyone know of any units that would fit a 93 Def, or an aftermarket unit, or should I just get an electric dashboard fan and grow some balls?
Any suggestions would be a great help.
    Thanks.

PS: Justin Cooper in Kingston (Tasmania) did the repairs to my truck and did a fantastic job. He is a total LEGEND!

Have you looked at the aircon set up from a 200tdi disco, should be able to bolt it straight on and shouldnt cost a fortune. Just fit it all up and get it gased up.

A mist bottle sprayed into the vent would blow the mist back, would be even better LOL

The Aussie fitted underdash units are ok but not great. I would consider a mini van / small bus type unit and mount it to the roof behind the passenger seats. Either way new will cost you around $2k fitted but if you are not used to the Aussie outback heat you will need one.
Temps up here pretty much are over 40degC for 3 months of the year in the shade.

If you are going to be on a dirt road you will need masks to breathe through with the windows open.

I drove all around Aus (45000 k's) in my 90 and that does not have air con. The vents on the front are good have them open and the windows closed and will also stop dust coming in the car. But also keeps the car cool when driving along

Tint the side windows too as that helps alot to keep the car cool. Stops you legs and arms getting burnt and hot . Also alot cheaper than air con

    Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks for all the useful tips guys. I will take a look at the disco air-con and check out the price. Love the idea of the damp cloth over the vents though - its a very 'Land Rover' solution. Will also look at window tinting.
    See you out there!

?? A Disco air con wont fit as it is integrated into the dash. For a Defender you will need an under dash, mini van style interior roof or under dash mounted unit or an external/internal roof mounted unit.
Believe me once you hit this part of the country, especially on dusty roads you will want an air con, if not to cool the car, to at least pressurize it a bit to keep some of the dust out. A lot will depend on how much dirt road driving you are going do.
