What car are we originally referring to? Only ask as I had a RRC that would flash the trlr light once if no trailer, and flash the indicator arrow rapidly if there was a globe blown on that side. My D2 doesn't flash the trlr light unless there's a trailer connected and also flashes the ind arrow if a globe is out.

My post is about the D2. I made the assumption that was the vehicle that the post was about but going back I see that this was not stated at any time. I don't know how other systems work.
