Can of worms....
...but if you are insured by Suncorp, whom I believe are the only insurers who offer cover for flood ??? - I would expect, as the insured risk, to be sorted asap.
As to insured who thought they were covered and non-insured - well, the fine print is there to be read, but most of us never do. When it comes to carving up the money from government/donations...do the Suncorp customers miss out? Do those who thought they were covered get less of a handout than those not insured?
Are those at the "big end" of town less deserving? More questions than answers I'm afraid.
Given that the poorest people are the worst hit, and they need to spend the money within the local economy, the money isn't wasted. It's not like they will send the money back to their poor relatives in India. Even if the local pub gets their money it stays in local circulation. The amounts aren't huge in the general run of costs incurred from the floods. Push the lowest income earners further down the ladder and you get Mexico.

This is no different to 1974.The then National Party dominated government put a means test in place. My father suffered in that he was in eligible for any assistance under the state system. So really what's new? Just a different government.
If you are well off and fully insured why do you need handouts? If you had millions and lost the lot you may well have the ability to make them again.
Insurance companies are crooks and will try to wriggle out of paying anybody. If your insurance doesn't cough up, you have no insurance, or you simply didn't read the policy closely enough then this is just a social safety net. The reason I put earnings away in a bank account for a rainy day is because I trust banks slightly more than insurance companies. I would rather pay cash to have something repaired than put up with the **** you need to go through with insurance. I trust insurance like one would trust a P38.So yes I am happy with the basic premise of the article you linked. Help the most unfortunate first.
Pretty typical. If you work hard and do the right thing (in this case have insurance) then you get shafted. If you don't do the right thing (think uninsured dole bludger) then the government will come and pick up after you and make it all better.
Many people thought they had flood insurance but their insurers are splitting hairs as to the type of flood and saying they were not covered for this sort of flood, only that sort of flood and this is not one that we cover.
Speaking to a Suncorp rep the other day it transpires that they insure against water damage so all is covered.
From newspaper and news comments, it would appear that AAMI & RACQ are denying claims. No surprise to me, having had unsatisfactory dealings with both in the past.
