    Work in WA Mining Industry

Have a friend from NSW wanting to get into the WA mining industry (OH&S work). He has asked me if I knew of anyone using these people - if they are any good.

    Mining Australia

Wife is fairly well connected in the mining industry but she says she knows little about them. Anybody else know anything of them or know of anyone who has used their services?

    Don't know about mining australia

can you tell you from experience as being HR recruiter at a recent time in my life for a WA mining company that their preference is to recruit Perth or South West region based employees for FIFO roles and only will take East Coast employees for specialist roles that are hard to or recruit from a limited pool in WA.

So if he is serious about working in WA Mining or Construction on major resource projects on FIFO he would improve his chances of interview and job by moving to Perth before applying.

If he is NSW based may be better looking at Qld resource industry also FIFO

Mining OHS FIFO roles generally paying $120,000 for 2 week on 5 days off roster

    I agree with cartm58's comments.

I work as a manager in the mining industry, and have never heard of the mob you have provided the link to. Reading through their web page, it sounds like they might want a fair chunk of money from you - with no real guarantee of finding you a job. They certainly don't appear to be a recruitment agency.

If your friend has OH&S qualifications & relevant experience, there are many companies he/she could apply to who provide services to the industry in that field and who are all regularly looking for people. Also, there are many recruiting agencies who are often looking for people with an OH&S background to fill vacancies that they have with clients, either on a permanent or short-term fill-in basis.

Personally, I wouldn't touch anyone who is asking for money to "find" you a position. The recruitment agencies who actually have the contracts to fill positions all get paid by their clients - the mining companies.

And as cartm58 has said already, I would be very surprised to see anyone recruit an OH&S advisor or similar out of the eastern states.
    Cheers .........

    Agree with the above comments.

Also, the mining companies I have worked with have agreements with council etc of 50% (or similar) "local" employment (local may still be FIFO or bus/in-out). So this means if your mate moves somewhere like the pilbara or kimberley he will have an even better chance of a job than moving to perth.

Barnsey on outerlimits4x4.com works in OH&S in the QLD (and now indonesian) mining industry.

Yeah being eastern states he would be better off going QLD or SA. Seems to be a greater chance getting a FIFO role to either of these than trying for WA out of east. Dollars are sorta (I'm doing a bit better in SA at the moment than what was on offer for me in WA, but not normally the case) comparable and the rosters are normally the same if not a bit kinder (15 days on, 13 off in a construction job for me at the moment yay), especially when you take travel time into consideration.

The stuff I know of seems to be a long way off at the moment, but around Roma and Gladstone is going off it's head in the next few years, as will Roxby and Whyalla if the stars ever align and the jobs they are threatening us with ever happen.

Nothing against WA, not at all, but contrary to what the media would have us believe, there are other places and projects of significance that FIFO in Australia at the moment. These jobs and (for the most part) conditions are pretty much the same, albeit on a smaller scale most of the time.

As for the recruitment company, never heard of them

Unless the law of the land has changed since I retired from Social Security, an employment agent may NOT charge the client a fee for placing a client in employment. The agent charges the employer.

You may find they are trying to charge you an "assessment" or similar charge. Tell them to get stuffed.

If your mate moves to the Pilbara he will be paying $1500-$3000 per week for rent before he gets a job.
If he can afford it fine but I would try to get a job first

There is plenty of FREE accommodation in Wittenoom!!! Fair enough Djam. I think prices in Kunners are much lower?

Brian - I think many companies charge fees for spurious/unnecessary tickets that you supposedly need...

My answer still. Tell them to get stuffed. Any employment agent doing this is operating outside the code of ethics and will be found to be a two bob con shop. Report them to the appropriate state and federal bodies and tell them you have done so.

A reputable and competent employment agency (or whatever other fancy name they give themselves) does not charge the worker, only the employer as required by law.
