    Bendethra - Deua NP

Anyone thinking of heading into Bendethra over Easter - may pay to check with NPWS closer to the date.

CLOSURE NOTICE: Deua National Park is closed until further notice due to damage to access and river crossings caused by recent heavy rains.

    Hi,

This is not the only bit of churned up road in the area......

I did come back up through Wadbilliga last week, and that track is FUBAR.

I rang the ranger on Monday, and the road is now apparently closed indefinitely.

This is a real shame, because they spent a motza fixing up the road before the Wadbilliga Crossing picnic area.

A fellow in a Toymazbitzu ute nearly went over the edge at Conways Gap, and spent a fair few anxious hours waiting for a tow out. Funny thing is that he got stuck going down on the Friday night, and I got caught behind him going back up Sun!?!

There are washaways that are truly awesome, and will take an awful lot of repair.

I do believe that the indefinite closure may tend toward permanence......

    Cheers,

    Andy

That is a pretty common occurrence in NSW NP, much the same way as wilderness is a management tool (lock it up and then we don't have to do anything - weed, feral animal management, track maintenance etc.)

Although I have never been to Bendethra at Easter (as I don't like crowds) I believe that quite a mob get down there each Easter.

That decision is therefore going to cause quite a few people to change their plans and will put more pressure on other nearby areas.

I recall that after the recent bushfires throughout the Victorian High country and the resultant extensive track closures, Vic Parks made a concerted effort to at least get the major tracks reopened before the Easter break. It's a pitty that the NSW NPWS don't or can't, due possibly to financial restraints, adopt similar operational practices.

Bendethra, Wadbilliga, The Bridal Track etc ................................. what next?
Maybe we need to lobby the new NSW government regarding this adverse affect on tourism and encourage them to allocate some $$$ to a couple of 'dozer operators.

Martyn, I just rang NPWS and they said that all campsites in Deua Nat. Park are open, EXCEPT for Bendethra which they say is closed because of damage to river crossings caused by high water from recent rains and fallen trees. NPWS do not know if or when work will be carried out to open the Bendethra valley.
I then called a local Councillor and head of the Chamber of Commerce, he was told by NPWS that the whole of Deua was closed, he pointed out that if Bendethra was closed over Easter it would be disastrous for business's in Moruya and surrounding area, I asked if he could get Council to see if they could do something, he will get back to me and I will keep you all posted.
I can't imagine what it will be like for hundreds (+) of campers to show up and find Bendethra closed, it will put other campsites under terrific strain and a lot will go home disappointed, Regards Frank.

Roger, last time I took a day trip thru Bendethra at a peak holiday period I noticed that even though there was possibly a 1000 people there it was not in any way crowded, there were many places where you could camp without intrusion from other campers.
I would suggest that anyone that wants to see Bendethra opened for the school holidays and Easter should ring Eurobodalla Shire Council (02) 44 741000 and enquire why council is not doing something to open or help open Bendethra also the Moruya Chamber of Commerce on (02) 44743981 , Regards Frank.

I don't know anything about the Deua situation but if the following photos from adjacent areas are any indication, then you may understand why there is closure: Flood damage, South East Forests National Park - a set on Flickr

I just wish to advise everyone that Mr Someone Else has passed away and therefore can no longer do everything.

Thanks Frank - I have camped at Bendethra a number of times and know that it is quite an extensive area but I still consider 1000 as too crowded for my liking. As a retiree, I have the ability, and naturally prefer to visit areas such as Bendethra when others are less likely to be there.

Like Gumnut said above, I just hope that something can be done soon and the closure doesn't become permanent.

I have led many trips, including accommodated ones through the VicHigh country and I know how much the small towns and business's in the vicinity of these parks rely on the tourists for their survival.

Thanks for, and all the best with your efforts and contact via local council.
    Roger
