BUT the irony is that all the original free to air channels (2,3,7,9,10) are now all SD, as my vastly expensive full HD set tells me with its 576P in the info band .Quote:
8-9 years old..... probably not even an HD, for $600-$800 you can get a full HD and you just won't believe the difference!

As somebody who used to repair these things for a living my advice is to chuck it and get the best warranty u can buy on a new one
Thats why I no longer have my own business and there aint too many repairers left that do repairs any more..we all got screwed by technology and the downward trend in price! I couldn't survive on 30 dollars a warranty repair.
It will probably need the boards as Loanrangie has said but its not worth it

If you decide to go for a new one ask in the store for them to demo the tv with a test pattern. Same one on each TV so you can see the difference. In the UK at least the shops are all supplied with one by the manufacturers. Helps you see which one is the best for your eyes. They do not set them up properly in the store so can sell you the one they want to. Plasmas are cheap as they are old technology on the way out while LED is the future.

I was in the product training demonstration facility for one of the largest consumer electronics products manufacturers a week or so ago. No I cannot say who. They are paranoid secrective and I do not want the potential hassle.
They had banks of TV's including competitor brands set up and running with a changing variety of images running from action to landscape and test patterns.
Was talking to one of the techies who said look around and then let him know which picture I thought was the best. After a few minutes came back and nominated one which I expected to be a plasma. No was the LED.
Was advised that this was normal if you were given the chance to make an equal comparison without the sales person as the LED technology in latest generation was now so good. There was far more detail in the LED which was just a blur in the plasma.
Am advised by said techie that it will go even further ahead when 'full' LED is available in a year or 2.
Myself though I still have an old style tube TV as cannot be bother to update.
