Smile I grew balls of steel - P38 for UK trip

I'm still not sure if I've done the right thing or not but I've just bought a P38 in Somerset for a trip that the Monster and I have planned for July/August this year. I found the P38 on Ebay.uk and it read well, I asked all the pertinent questions and seem to have found a genuine seller who has done his best to accommodate my needs.

I'll bet there will be a down side but I'm stoked with the vehicle and will miss it when we come back I'm sure. Only time will tell I suppose!

I am told that the cruise control isn't currently working. Has anyone been able to fix the vacuum operated cruise control on these models?

I'm told if you don't turn the cruise control on, it works fine!

Make sure you have insurance for everyone who drives the vehicle, apparently it's not like here where the car is insured, in the UK it's the driver/s.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

You will need a UK address to get car insurance. See if you can organise it from Australia, before you go.

Really must learn to press the right buttons on this forum, blummin thanks button is where reply button is on another forum I normally use

If you need someone to sort it out / inspect it before you arrive I can highly recommend a chap called Stuart Armson, he's a **** hot P38 fettler based in Leicester, but goes mobile should you need it. I used him with my P38 and now use him for my RRS, he's been instrumental in fixing an ongoing running fault with mine that LR themselves couldn't resolve.

His website's Home - Armson Automotive Engineers it can be a bit temperamental at times and doesn't really reflect how good he is, so if you have no luck with it and do want him to check the car out for you then drop me a message and I'll sort it.

Crucially, his rates are more than reasonable and he's dedicated. He's been working on my car after hours, some nights I've arrived at 6.30pm after work and we've still been working on it at 11pm. No extra cost either. Really, a brilliant chap.

    Cheers
    Mike

Be prepared for a shock when you organise car insurance, when I lived in UK my wife had an 88 model VW polo worth 600 pounds, with me insured as an aussie it was more than 300 pounds. Car insurance in UK is very expensive, I have suggested buying cars to use when travelling to UK but it works out more expensive in the end by the time you add in insurance and having to sell car at end of trip, let alone breakdowns. Good luck with it but be warned.
    Cheers Matt

Insurance is expensive, and so is petrol (currently £1.30 a litre for unleaded so a 4.6 without LPG will cost a few quid in fuel). There is an option to get 'classic' insurance on a P38, especially if the mileage being covered is only going to be low (say less than 6000 miles per year). They're policies designed for classic cars that don't cover many miles, so the risk is seen as lower.

Plenty of specialist classic policy providers in the UK, shouldn't be too difficult to sort once you have an address to register the car at.
