    Small warranty claims. (Fishing reel)

I was given a Shimano reel as a gift and unfortunately it seized up on it's first outing. I took it to my local tackle store to make a warranty claim and they said that they'd look after it which I thought was good as the place of purchase is about 3/4 of an hour away. 3 days later they rang to tell me that my reel is fixed and that they'd opted instead to get my reel fixed by their reel mechanic as it would cost me about the same to get it fixed by him as what the freight to and from Shimano would have cost me.
My question is : Am I liable for the said freight charges because the reel wasn't purchased at that tackle store ?.
I shouldn't complain as these blokes have looked after me well in the past but I can't help but think that even though the cost was stuff all, maybe this time they got me.

    Cheers,
    Anthony.

Sounds like they should have got your permission first on how the repair was to be carried out!!!

Generally you will be liable for freight costs and usually it is in the fine print in the warranty, sucks I know but that is the way it is.
Maybe look at the Shimano warranty specs.
Surely we are only talking about $10 max?
Wait until you are 2000kms form a LR authorized warranty repairer and you are told it will need to be returned to an authorized warranty repairer at your expense for a $200 repair job.

They should have asked you what you wanted to do but you take your chances when you rely on a 'warranty'.

Better to rely on Consumer Law. Under Australian law, products must be fit for purpose. If it's not fit for purpose, return it to the place that you bought it and they must repair, replace, or refund. There is no defined time limit.

The 'warranty' that you are claiming under gives you less protection than you are entitled to under law... and don't get me started about extended warranties.
