    Latest on access to Bendethra

Have just spoken to Regional Manager (South Coast) on whether NPWS could use some help in getting access open to Bendethra, seems that the major repair left is damage to the banks of the 2nd river crossing.
The work left to be done can only be done by heavy machinery, all the other work that Volunteers could have helped with has been done and thanks go to those who offered to help.
NPWS are doing their best to have the river crossing repaired for Easter, so here's hoping, Regards Frank.

It's usually the third crossing that gets knocked around. Still in some ways it's good, most rivers on the east coast needed a real good flush though. Nature has finally redressed the balance - from drought to flood in a few days .

Martyn, the NPWS bloke actually said the 3rd crossing, but when he said the banks were damaged I assumed he was talking about the 2nd crossing as the 3rd crossing doesn't really have banks like the 2nd crossing and if it was the 3rd crossing then at least acess to about a third of Bendethra would be open. He also stated that it was the crossing at the start of the camping area proper so I assumed it was the 2nd crossing just after the Dampier/Bendethra FT junction ( coming in from Moruya), wow does all that make sense, I'd better check again tomorrow, Regards Frank.

    Frank,

This is the one I pictured, where after you cross, you head up over a small spur then down onto Joeys flat. I could imagine water swirling in the track exit and scouring out the bank.

This one has moved a couple of times over the years, after this pic was taken (~1982) the crossing moved down stream maybe 5-600m before being reinstated to its current location.

Martyn, I'd forgotten that steep bit pictured there, NPWS did say that the banks were now "cliff like" and that seemed to fit the 2nd crossing, anyway I'll get back in touch and find out for sure, Regards Frank.
