Changed FL Ball joint.
Replaced front shocks.
Repaired many oil leaks.
And other little things to small to mention.

When I send the rig in for service – it gets whatever is requested – I do not skimp on maintenance as this is my only vehicle.

I love the car – it is great to drive – but I have spent almost $10 K on repairs in almost 3 years. Almost everything is a $1000. Admittedly – I take the vehicle to a LR dealer as I don’t have the knowledge or the time to repair myself.

I now have a problem with the transfer case. Every time I take my foot off the accelerator I get a big clunk – and it is not backlash. So I am not sure what this will cost me.

I am planning on going to the Cape later this year – but am truly worried about the reliability of the D2.

Sadly – if I know three years ago what I know today – I would never have purchased a Land Rover.

Can anyone help with advice about the clunking noise which is the reason that I am on the site.

See my prev. post, I can't understand why anyone with no mechanical expertise would buy a second hand LR and not expect to have to do repairs, with labour costs charged by dealerships climbing to $130/hour, you have to be ,....... well healed. What does it cost for a service, do you actually check if they have done what you're paying for, get some knowledge and some tools and learn how to fix your LR, with proper preventive maintenace most of the problems can be fixed before they become ridiculously expensive. I wouldn't go anywhere off road in any 4wd of any make if I didn't at least know how it works and the basic how to fix, Regards Frank.

Another friend had the Jetta predecessor 2003 ? and ran out of oil because of consumption of 1L per 1000Kms and VW told her to take a hike as she hadn't checked it. This was a well known problem for VW and I believe there was a class action in USA over it.

So Land Rover are not alone with problems, but I am surprised that if you knew of Land Rover unreliability at the time of buying, that you bought it. Lets face it, if you want reliability buy Japanese or now Korean. If you want comfort and character buy European and put up with the hassles.

Was it that it was 20K cheaper than a cruiser? If so you are still at least 13K ahead.LOL

My Polo cost me nothing in 10 years,my BIL has a 20 year old golf thats going strong,a SIL and Aunty both drive a Golf and Polo,my sister has a Passat and none have spent money on them or ever had oil consumptions issue's. Pat

I'm with you. If I had to spend $7000 on REPAIRS alone over a period of 130,000km then I to wouldn't be terribly impressed. Ofcourse, the same could happen with many different makes of vehicle. But this is YOUR experience with YOUR piece of crap DII. You should more than welcome to convey your feelings and opinions in an OPEN DISCUSSION forum which this is suppose to be.

I bet if you came on here praising your car everyone would be singing, dancing and holding hands. Instead you gave an honest account of the shortfalls of your LR vehicle and everyone here is having a little cry about it. Good old AULRO.

I stick up for LR because I've never had issue's with them.My defender is going strong at 445,000k's which is better than any Toyota or Nissan I've ever had. Pat

Long first post!! Sorry to hear of your woes.

You should probably make a new post under the Disco section or the General Chat section with a heading of "Clunking transfer case" or something like that, and you'll get more people looking at it.

Like many here, I tend to agree that spending about $9k (including services)over 130,000km on a car that now has 260k on it is not unreasonable. I'm on my second D2 and both have cost me money, but so did the Land Cruiser I had some years back and also an original 'bullet proof' 4.2 diesel patrol. Now the Patrol didn't cost me alot, but I only kept it for 70,000k's as it was an absolute SLUG on the road (no turbo on the early ones) and although extremely capable off road, it was bloody uncomfortable on long drives.

My 'new' D2a now has about 250k on it, I paid $8k for it and everyone on here who has seen it knows that I stole it! That said, I've spent about $6k getting it right (admittedly that includes installing the lockers from my old one) but for $14k, I now have an incredibly capable offroader and a superbly comfortable long range tourer (we drive up and back to Brisbane at least twice a year, as well as other pretty substantial trips).

I don't subscribe to the view that LR's are the greatest car on the road, but I seriously believe that you have simply underestimated the extra costs involved in running ANY 4wd compared to a conventional vehicle. Many people make the same mistake. Fact is, they cost more to run than conventional vehicles.

I for one would rather drive my D2a 1700km's over 2 days than an old series 2, but I'll probably get yelled at for saying so;)

Nothing wrong with sticking up for them mate. I do to and I love Land Rovers. Have pictures of them on my office wall. But I can't see why almost everyone here gets so offended when someone points out a flaw with the oh so glorious LR brand. It's not like the guy came here and said "all Land Rovers are ****"....he's just saying the one he bought was.

But oh no, people like bob10 get oh so offended at the thought and reach for the ultra bogan cries of "harden the F-up" and blah blah blah as though their own mother was directly offended.

AULRO is a great community with plenty of genuinely nice, helpful people. Then again, AULRO can just be so petty...like most brand specific car forums I suppose.

My Subaru has done about that and so far I've only had to purchase a clutch kit (my fault for burning the old one) and a new starter motor.
Pretty reliable I reckon...and most of those KMs were a lot rougher and hardcore than the majority of Landies face :P

If it has done 2 starters I'd say the root cause is actually a leaky fuel block. Get another LR expert. But I couldn't say who is good or not, I just buy parts, cause I'm fussy about maintaining cars, comes from driving and restoring Jags etc, I don't trust most mechanics cause they can't fix things mostly, but then I don't pay them either.

I too think that some people can get a bit precious but I also accept that not all the items listed as having to have repairs are anything more than normal maintenance items.

Multiple fuel pumps is not what I would expect and if your mechanic is using aftermarket parts for fuel pumps then you may have struck some bad ones. Touch wood I have not had fuel pump problems and my D2a is on 180+kkm.

I have sprung a leak from the fuel lines which I accept to be a bad design and I have also had a fuel cooler replaced. I have also replaced my air bags which was an easy job and used a brand that my mechanic would not have used if I had asked him to do the job. I did get the air bags directly from O/S and significantly cheaper than if I had of gone genuine, I was prepared to take a chance on what I consider to be a low tech item which others had bought and found to be of good quality. That is one of the good things about watching and participating on these forums you get to find out what others have tried and found to be good as well as the bad parts/brands.

I don't blame people for venting their frustrations and I am also not surprised that some will defend their vehicle marque. Occasionaly people go overboard with this to the extent of getting offensive and if not that just insensitive to others that don't feel the same about the marque. When you go onto the www and engage with people that only use an alias to identify themselves you have to expect that some are going to fire with no concern for others more sensitive or of a different frame of mind.
