Mr and Mrs Bassflicker do Australia

As some of you may have seen in the project and tutorials, I have been preparing our 85 county (isuzu) for our round australia trip. I didn't have the time to keep posting in the lead up to the trip as we were fitting airbags, steps and all the rest to the truck. We are currently at yunta about 150km west of Broken hill and we are going to set og up the arkaroola track which will lead us to our first off road driving around willow springs.

So far we have spent about five days in coonamble at Sarahs Aunt and uncles cattle station. Her uncle is 75yrs old and fourth generation on that property. He's also a mad keen gyro flyer and the long weekend saw many people fly into the property for a flying weekend get together. It was a wonderful easter with all the pilots, even though the weekend was dampened by a tragic flying accident.

Please keep track of us via our blog and feel free to link it to Aulro whenever you like. You can register for our updates and make comments on our blog whenever about whatever.

    Garth,
I used to live at YUNTA!, Opposite the pub was the old shell servo which was run by harry and george Ding. They set up the supply truck from here that travelled from YUNTA to BIRDSVILLE and back with gear for sale to the stations (incl food supplies etc) Tom KRUSE and his brother both worked for DINGs and Toms brother was killed in a truck accident whilst Tom was up north. After this Dings hooked up with Alf TRAEGER and redesigned the HF radio into a two part unit (transmit/receive) so it could be fitted to the vehicles..This and the pedal unit made the radio ideal for the ROYAL FLYING DOCTOR to use to communicate with people in vehicles... They also built the leyland badger that Tom KRUSE bought from them when he took over the mail/supply route from MARREE onwards.. (and which has been restored.)

On your way up the track take time to have a look about at both TEETULPA and WAUKARINGA goldfields - they have bits of history strewn about (at WAUKARINGA there is still a "pitch" cricket pitch from the gold days...and a cemetery,, remains of pub etc(only closed in 60's or 70's I think))

The road should have some magnificent flowers and greenery about due to the recent persistant rains. Take care!, some of the track leading up the beef road** can be slippery and washes out in points if heavy heavy rains...

have a great trip.. (welcome to south australia!)

    (**the beef road..
its original purpose in being pushed right through so well was to bring cattle down to the railhead to be used to feed troops etc during the war..so was called the beef road... now also known as the arkaroola road)

Well what a week. We drove up the arkaroola track to wilpena and did a day trek around Willow springs station. I highly recomend this drive as it takes you through some amazing flinders ranges country and provides some great 4wd ing.

We camped at brachina gorge for both before and after willow springs and then moved on to Marree then to william creek. from there we took the halligan bay ttrack out and camped by lake eyre.

Now in port augusta. will post more from melbourne!

Well, it's been a funny couple of weeks with not a lot of action, and not much sleeping in the Landy. I have however got to know Adelaide city very well and realise I still hate melbounre weather.I Have now completed my License accreditation for my trade and have caught up with lots of Sarah's friends and family in melbourne, so I'm very ready to head north.

I did venture to try and meet up with Member Land864 for some perving on each others vehicles but alas our schedules did not line up. So I will give some real notice next time i'm in melbs hoping to meet with some southern Landrover crew.

We have updated a few stories and Pics enjoy. Living in Steve

WOW it's been a while but finally I have some time to sit down and tell you guys a bit about our trip. So, we are as far as Arlie beach and traveling well. We have been finding free camps where ever possible and have for the first time rented a little ville for a couple of nights to recoup, re organise and take advantage of wi fi on our lap top.

Our list of damages over 10,000kms of the trip are :
    1 flat tyre
    1 new radiator
re plumbed left air bag due to leaky line
    1 uni joint
    1 front output shaft seal
    1 brake fault regulator
and still to be fixed a leaky vaccum in the brake booster.
I have already organised to have the booster re built in townsville. I have driven the all the way from brisbane with some less that ordinary breaking system.

You can check out a few photo's of our trip here Living in Steve

Airlie Beach is a nice place, if not much of a 4wd destination. Make sure you stop at Cedar Creek Falls, good spot for a swim!
