    torquing to a cleaner diesel?

So the 87 RR diesel used to blow some smoke, but recently I have put the engine under high working torque conditions with a heavy trailer and also towing another vehicle in which I thrashed the engine hard in a torque way not rpm. Anyway it seems to me that the engine is running very clean which is not something I was looking for and came after the hard work. I was wondering if anyone knows if this is a correct observation with some logical explanation or just in my mind.

welcome to deglazing your diesel engine 101....

one of 2 things has happened.

    1. low power setting have caused the rings to carbon up and stick costing you compression and allowing a little oil fouling of the pots., cranking it up and working it burns this stuff off.

    2. the bores have "waxed" doing the same thing as above (which is glazing proper) and working it hard has scraped the bores back and now its sealing properly..

Diesels by their very nature are not meant to be driven to church on a Sunday by a lovely little old lady, that is abuse.
A diesel is meant to work and sometimes work hard (within EGT limits) so the bore does not glaze up. The easiest way to do that is sink the slipper going up a long hill, initially there will be some black smoke and then it will clean up.
This also applies when running in; wait until it is truly warm and make it work hard without over revving nor lugging and there will be no oil consumption issues.

good stuff guys I believe this is exactly what has happened to me. When I towed my mates car off the freeway the other day at nearly 100kph, I had the vic roads dude helping me get through traffic with his special van, when we pulled over at the end we found my mates cars brake caliper had locked up and I had dragged him the whole way, it felt hard to pull, I thought it was in gear, and the engine worked very hard, I think this is what has done it for me.

Also I have noticed 0.5L per 100km better fuel consumption since the incident.

My brother in law , who has driven diesels since mosses was in short pant`s, once said best thing for a diesel motor is to slam the vehicle`s door on your fingers and take it out in the beast for the rest of the trip. So not one for a lot of pain Iv`e opted to just drive it a bit harder. Drop a gear going up hills and make it rev a bit more. That sort of thing.

    Hi all,
Very true words, the trick is to work it and not rev the ring out of it,I love the door slam idea
