Import duties on Landy parts from UK

I got a set of pucka rear seat covers for the 110. Got them from the Uk eBay but they wanted more than they cost to send them to Aus. They wanted nearly $100 to post them. Lucky for me my brother still lives in the Uk so got them sent to him and he sent them on to me for $20 postage.
I have found somtimes, that I would love to know where they get the postage cost from.

I recently imported some stuff from the Uk - when ordered just under $950 and when arrived on Friday valued at $1030 - valuation is based when goods arrived in Aust. Goods came in via TNT who have their own customs section.

My total charges were $256 made up of

$51 customs and import duties (5% of cost of goods)
$149 GST (cost of goods + shipping costs + customs and import duties)
$56 Customs processing and administration fee.

Now if your goods are coming via the post the you might be lucky and slip through customs without have to pay import duties but if coming in via a courier like TNT then you will pay as everything is checked.

Fedex is probably the only courier I know that will get things through without charges (in my experience anyhow). Packages that actually require customs/quarrantine clearance that is

Not according to TNT - noting that TNT collect all costs and fees on behalf of Customs.

got a quote from toll friday for a crate from NZ.2 X cbm.

australian fees of a few hundred including the electronic processing fee that the company charges-then they are charged by customs to be linked directly to the system.

the freight is $75 cbm across the ditch-a few dollars in charges-but then they stuffed up and quoted sydney to bathurst local delivery charges at 0.20 cbm $850/CBM. total was $859.

but the real cost will be $2000+....but i dont live in bathurst.

If anyone can recommend a good courier to use, then please tell us. We use an agent (Postagesupermarket) who give us prices from different couriers and we pick the best option. We don't make money on carriage (on purpose) and like to keep things as cheap as possible, but sometimes carriage is a killer..

And if a shipment goes over $1,000 then we try to split it into two different packages. ;)
