Import duties on Landy parts from UK

Are there usually any import duties or taxes payable for buying parts from the UK via ebay etc when they actually arrive here? Does it depend on the amount or are personal imports not taxed?

Also are UK retailers selling to us supposed to take out the VAT tax (as Aussie reailers are supposed to do with GST when items are sold overseas)?

I'd be keen to hear if anyone has experienced any issues with overseas purchases, because I've found the costs are sooo much cheaper than Australian sellers for LR parts.

No VAT is only allied to domestic sales, not international. No duties below a certain amount (check Aust Customs website) Not sure how much....maybe $1000 value

As long as your landed price, including freight, when converted back to AUD$ is under $1000, no GST or import duty applies.

Yes, ex UK should be VAT free.

I've purchased a few items via Ebay (UK/USA) and also direct from the sellers web site (paid by Paypal usually). No problems.

For private imports the $1000 limit applies to goods prices only - does not include freight and shipping charges.

I buy overseas regularly from the 'Mother Country' and from the States.

From Britain no VAT should be charged as the item is going off shore. VAT is an 'in house' tax for residents.

Provided you keep each package below AUD$1000 (and this includes the freight) there is no import duties applicable on items that you may import into Australia.

It pays to have the supplier break the consignment up into smaller lots if your purchases is going to go over the dollar limit.

VAT is not normally payable - if it is charged there is a form you can fill out to claim it back after you recieve the goods and show that they were sent overseas.

So VAT is like their version of GST? Do all retailers charge it or only registered businesses? For example, i run a small sideline business but as my turnover isn't above a certain limit, I am not registered for gst. Is it the same with VAT or do all businesses pay it?
