Interesting comment - if true! (particularly the "Autocar speculates that the fifth-generation Discovery will target the Toyota Land Cruiser when it finally does launch, focusing on towing and practicality." But note that is labelled speculation.) Of course, to put the "11 years old" platform into perspective, the platform used for the Discovery 1 was twenty years old when the D1 was introduced. And there is no doubt that using an existing platform would be far cheaper than designing and tooling a new one. In my view, the only question would be whether to use the D3/4 platform or to use another existing one, either from Tata's stable or one bought in, and I think both of these are unlikely. It would be ideal to develop a new platform, and I suppose there is a bare possibility of this, particularly if they use the same platform for the Discovery and Defender, to spread the development costs.

I hope they come up with a new lighter chassis. I read somewhere that the next Range Rover would be much lighter, but be a 7 seater due to a monocoque design.

Maybe the Defender (and now as suggested the Disco) will retain a separate chassis, and the company will diverge into 2 arms

    (1) Utilitarian Vehicles - Defender & Discovery

    (2) Luxury Vehicles - Range Rover, Sport, Evoque

This strategy may see the utilitarian vehicles produced in India or China, but retain the Britishishness of the more expensive cars.

This of course is pure speculation, and I'm just rambling.
